Canada/Japan-based Jonah Yano consistently pops up on recordings with noteworthy artists such as BADBADNOTGOOD, Mk.gee, Clairo, Ouri, and Jacques Greene. But Yano doesn't need cool collaborators to merit your attention. His new album Spin, announced today, is another stellar entry in what's becoming quite the accomplished catalog.
Yano worked on the songs that became Spin in Montréal and on the Japanese island of Hokkaidō, then recorded the album in the Ontario town of Mountain Grove. It's a set of soft and thoughtful yet ambitiously rendered tracks, two of which are out today. Title track "Spin" works as a short and sweet theme for the operation, a gradually intensifying outburst of glittering elegance. "Holding On," the other new song, feels more like the proper lead single, a pensive and soulful track showcasing Yano's falsetto and his knack for gorgeous arrangements. It reminds me of this year's excellent Nick Hakim record.
