A few cents can cover the entire hoped-for gain once scalping trading costs are included. After crossing the spread and paying commissions, there may be little left; an unfavorable fill can reduce it further. For trades held briefly, these amounts deserve attention alongside the chart setup. Start with the actual entry and exit prices, the quantity traded, and the charges on the statement. That gives the result of a completed trade. Keep the original quotes nearby when reviewing execution, so the prices received can be compared with the prices available when ordering. Otherwise, an expense already reflected in a fill can end up being deducted again.
What scalping trading costs actually include
An account statement is a useful place to begin an audit of scalping trading costs. With scalping trading, positions may last seconds or minutes, leaving a small price change to cover the costs associated with scalping trades. Pocket Option's article covers those holding periods, execution, and the risks associated with the method. The worked example follows an ordinary stock bought and later sold. Its dollar commissions are invented for the calculation. No conversion between currencies is involved, and no account subscription is charged. Those assumptions would need adjusting for an account that incurs either expense. Nor does the example calculate returns from fixed-payout contracts: the settlement and payout provisions of those contracts would be needed for that.
Spread: subtract the quoted bid from the quoted ask.
Slippage: the quoted price used for comparison versus the actual fill.
Fees: the amounts charged separately for carrying out the transactions.
Check which price the chart displays
The chart settings should identify its price series, which might track completed transactions or just one side of the quote. A market purchase generally uses the ask side, whereas a market sale generally uses the bid side. Available quantity matters too. A visible quote may cover fewer shares than the order needs, and the market can move before execution. Assessing spread costs in scalping takes a quote record as well as a chart. A later screenshot cannot reconstruct the quote that was available before an earlier order. A small difference between two chart points says little about the prices actually available for the complete position.
Follow one trade from the quote to the statement
The position in this illustration stays at 100 shares, bought and then sold. Before the purchase, the quote reads $ 50.00/$ 50.02. Before the sale it reads 50.06/50.08, with the bid written first in both cases. The midpoint has risen six cents, suggesting a $6 move for that quantity. Suppose the actual orders receive $50.03 on purchase and $50.05 on sale. Charge $1 per order in this illustration. Relative to those quotes, the purchase costs a cent extra per share and the sale receives a cent less. Each order is assumed to fill all 100 shares at one price. They are constructed assumptions, not typical charges or evidence that a trading strategy works.
Reconcile fills before changing the strategy
The statement calculation is simply the difference between the actual sale and purchase prices, multiplied by quantity, less explicit charges. Spread and execution effects are already embedded in those fills. Check whether the broker's reported profit already has fees deducted, since statements differ in presentation. Use the quote log to investigate execution separately, matching each fill with the quote captured when its order was sent. Save the quote time and order time together with the reference price. Retain better-than-expected fills too; excluding them would distort the record of slippage in short-term trading. A limit order specifies an acceptable price or better, with no assurance that anybody will trade at that price. A missed fill has to be recorded separately, rather than entered as a completed trade with no cost.
Check that the purchase and sale cover equal quantities.
Use the purchase and sale fills in the calculation.
Deduct the explicit charges shown for those transactions.
Compare fills with timestamped quotes to investigate execution.
List orders that never filled outside the completed-trade results.
Set a cost threshold for the next review
In the example, the six-dollar midpoint gain disappears: two dollars separate the midpoint comparison from the quoted-price comparison, two more disappear through adverse fills, and commissions take the remaining two. The total scalping trading costs equal the entire benchmark gain. A test using midpoint prices would therefore need more than six dollars of gross gain per identical round trip to finish positive under these assumptions. Changing the position size or receiving different fills changes the arithmetic. A review of trading execution costs needs several recorded trades, including losses, with their short-term trading expenses entered consistently. A six-dollar paper gain is insufficient in this example. For an actual strategy, the question is whether its combined wins and losses still produce a positive result after the recorded costs.
