AI can now produce a polished image in seconds, and that has left brands with an awkward problem: when anyone can generate a similar look, a distinctive style gets harder to protect. Apple Music has answered with a new brand identity built on physical materials, sound waves and visible human effort. The idea behind it is ‘Made by sound.’
A New Look Built from Sound
Apple Music unveiled its new identity in October. The update brings a new wordmark, a custom sonic logo and fluid visuals that mirror the movement of sound. Apple worked with its design team, TBWA\Media Arts Lab, music producer Fred, and NEST Acoustics.
The project took months of testing. Instead of leaning only on computer-made effects, the team built a physical setup that turns music into patterns. A transducer converted audio signals into vibrations, which moved liquid in a shallow bath of mineral oil. Acrylic versions of the Apple Music note and wordmark sat in the liquid while ripples and light refractions shaped the result. The team filmed the output and used it to build the identity.
The design also draws on Apple’s Liquid Glass visual style. The bold lowercase wordmark uses a custom treatment of the SF Pro typeface, which ties the brand to sound while giving it a look of its own.

Why Human Creativity Matters More than Ever
Apple Music’s identity puts value on the thought, skill and physical work behind a creative result. The story of how the visuals were made adds meaning to the final design, and audiences can see that the work came from experiments, choices and teamwork, not a single text prompt.
That doesn’t mean Apple has rejected AI altogether. The project shows how a major brand can use modern technology while keeping human intent at the centre of its creative work. The process itself becomes part of the brand story.
Apple’s Wider Response to AI Music
The new identity arrives amid a broader debate over AI-made music, artist rights, fake streams and fair pay. In March, Apple Music introduced AI transparency tags for content such as artwork, tracks, compositions and music videos. At first, these tags worked through the content delivery process and weren’t shown directly to listeners.
In May, Apple stressed the need to protect artists, reduce stream fraud and stop impersonation. In August, the company announced plans for public-facing ‘Made with AI’ labels for content that relies heavily on artificial intelligence. These labels depend on artists, record labels and distributors supplying the required details.
One reported figure shows the scale of the issue. Apple Music executive Oliver Schusser said more than one-third of monthly uploads were fully AI-generated, yet such music accounted for less than 0.5% of listening. That gap between what enters the service and what people choose to hear is wide.
Apple hasn’t banned AI-made music. Its approach centres on clear labels, fraud control and stronger protection for artists, and the human-made identity fits into that effort to build trust and preserve a clear creative identity.
What the Shift Means for Artists and Brands
For artists, a clear visual style and a genuine story behind the work may help a release stand out from the flood of new content. For streaming services, reliable information and careful curation can help listeners find music that suits them. For brands, fast production alone doesn’t create a lasting identity.
A handmade process doesn’t guarantee that every design will connect with its audience, and AI labels don’t settle every concern about authorship or fair pay. Apple still has to show that its ideas can earn trust beyond a single launch.

Craft as a Competitive Edge
As AI tools make content cheaper to produce, original ideas, honest credit, and skilled creative choices may become the scarce things. Apple Music has made that argument visually, without claiming AI has no place in music. Whether it works will depend on a simple measure: do listeners feel a stronger bond with the music and the artists behind it?
