Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital on Friday after collapsing at the club’s training ground.
The 40-year-old had recently been suffering from a viral infection and missed the pre-match news conference on Tuesday ahead of Bayern’s Champions League clash with Arsenal.
However, the former Manchester City and Belgium defender recovered sufficiently to take his place on the touchline for Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against the Gunners.
“Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern’s amateurs,” the club said in a statement.
“The first-team coach had been watching the second team’s session. Kompany will undergo thorough examination in the hospital and remain in medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage training and match operations.”
Bayern are scheduled to face Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, with Kompany’s coaching staff expected to oversee preparations and matchday duties in his absence.
Kompany took charge of Bayern in May 2024 after leaving Burnley, succeeding Thomas Tuchel, who is now England manager.
He had guided Burnley to the Championship title in the 2022/23 season but was unable to prevent the club’s relegation from the Premier League the following campaign.
Despite that setback, Bayern appointed the Belgian, who has since led the German giants to consecutive Bundesliga titles.
He also guided the club to the semi-finals of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League, where they were eliminated by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain(PSG).
