Colombo, Oct 15 (Daily Mirror) - The Illegal Assets Investigation Division has frozen cash and property worth over Rs. 85 million in Jaffna over suspicions that the assets were acquired through drug trafficking.
According to the Police, the assets include Rs. 15 million in cash and a two-storey house valued at over Rs. 70 million in Madagal, Jaffna.
The investigation stems from an incident on August 31, 2023, when officers of the Jaffna Special Task Force (STF) camp arrested five suspects and seized a lorry in connection with the possession of Rs. 15 million. The suspects were subsequently handed over to the Kopay Police.
Further investigations by the Illegal Assets Investigation Division revealed that a 32-year-old suspect from Madagal had constructed the house using money allegedly earned through drug trafficking.
The Rs. 15 million seized during the operation is currently in the custody of the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court.
Acting under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, orders have been issued to freeze the cash and the property for 14 days with effect from October 15, 2026.
The Illegal Assets Investigation Division is conducting further investigations into the matter.
