For the first time in recent memory, the cemetery on the island of Janitzio in the municipality of Pátzcuaro will be closed to tourists on November 1 and 2. The closure, necessitated by ongoing rehabilitation and masonry work following a rockfall in August, marks a significant shift in the traditional Day of the Dead pilgrimage.
While the site remains a primary destination for thousands of annual visitors, local authorities have specified that only families from the island will be permitted to enter for traditional vigils and family visits. To accommodate the public, a panoramic walkway, a side bridge, and a dedicated viewpoint will be established, allowing tourists to observe the traditional ceremonies from a safe distance.
Despite the restricted access to the cemetery, the island authorities have scheduled a variety of cultural activities to showcase Purépecha heritage, including the display of monumental altars and the traditional butterfly boat fishing spectacle.
The Michoacán state government announced that the broader Day of the Dead celebrations will be a massive undertaking, featuring more than 700 cultural, artistic, and ceremonial activities across the state’s seven tourist regions. The festivities are scheduled to run from October 23 through November 2, supported by a coordinated logistical operation designed to ensure a safe and organized experience for both domestic and international visitors.
Other regional highlights include:
- Capula: Hosting the 16th National Fair of the Catrina from October 18 to November 3, showcasing popular folk art.
- Lake Pátzcuaro: Featuring the mystical “Path of the Souls” traditional canoe route on Urandén Island and the installation of family altars in Santa Fe de la Laguna starting October 30.
- Morelia: A massive parade of “catrinas” and “catrines” is scheduled for November 1 on Madero Avenue.
- Gastronomy: The region will also celebrate with the Bread and Atole Festival in the Magic Town of Tacámbaro, the Bread Fair in Tangancícuaro, and a monumental culinary offering in Zitácuaro.
