The state is ready to put on trial a man accused of walking into the women’s toilets at a Sandton restaurant, demanding to photograph a woman and threatening three people with death, after handing his defence the docket.
NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said Lawrence Chamurwa Mudzinganyama, 40, had made a brief appearance in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, where his defence asked for more time to consult with him.
The case was postponed to October 30 for a trial date to be set.
“The NPA has furnished the defence with the contents of the docket, and the matter has been transferred to the regional court at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court for further proceedings,” Kganyago said.
“The NPA is ready to proceed with the matter and remains committed to ensuring that cases are prosecuted diligently and that all accused persons are afforded a fair trial.”
Mudzinganyama faces three counts of intimidation, three counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, three counts of crimen injuria and one count of fraud.
The charges relate to an incident at Vlamo Restaurant in Sandton on September 18.
It is the state's case Mudzinganyama went into the women’s toilets and demanded to take photographs of one of the witnesses.
He is also alleged to have threatened three witnesses with violence and death.
The crimen injuria charges stem from allegations that he insulted the complainants and impaired their dignity by calling them a derogatory name in front of other people.
The fraud charge relates to the allegation that he told the witnesses he owned Vlamo Restaurant, though he allegedly knew he was not its lawful owner.
His bail was extended until his next appearance on October 30.
