By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): There may be hope for air service to Punta Gorda.
Prime Minister John Briceño has confirmed that Maya Island Air has expressed interest in operating a route to the south, after Tropic Air announced it will close its Punta Gorda station on November 1.
Briceño said Tropic Air made a commercial decision because it had been losing money on the route.
“You can’t force a company to run, a private company to be able to continue to run that,” he said.
The Prime Minister said the Government is now in discussions with Maya Island Air’s CEO, and likely with the Belize Airports Authority.
He said he hopes to hear the airline’s terms by this week or early next week to see if it is something the Government can work with.
