With some rumors now suggesting that Sonny Gray could return for another year, it remains uncertain if that will be with the Boston Red Sox.
There's an argument to be made that the organization will have to go out and add another starting pitcher.
As we've discussed before, teams always need to add more pitching, no matter who they have in the bullpen and starting rotation. For a team like the Red Sox, one that should be a contender, adding another starter should be a priority, even if Gray returns.
There's no such thing as too much pitching, which is why going after a guy like Michael King seems to make a lot of sense.
King, 31 years old, is also from upstate New York, growing up in Rochester. He spent his college days at Boston College, making him an even more intriguing option for Boston. The right-hander has an opt-out in his contract this winter.
“King bounced back from an injury-plagued 2025 with a stellar 2026 for San Diego. As a result, he'll likely be one of the pricier free-agent pitchers this offseason.
“That shouldn't dissuade the Red Sox from pursuing the New England native and Boston College alum. King is as consistent as they come when healthy, and if he declines his $28 million option for 2027, he'd be an exceptional addition to the middle of Boston's already-strong rotation,” Justin Leger wrote.
King has all the stuff teams should be looking for this offseason. His playoff performances were ridiculous: he appeared in three games and started two. He threw 14.0 innings, posted a 0.64 ERA, and struck out 15 hitters.
King also had a great regular season, throwing 185.0 innings and posting a 3.21 ERA.
