As the holiday season approaches, small business owners have a unique opportunity to tap into emerging consumer trends through TikTok Shop, the platform’s in-app shopping feature. With significant growth in user engagement and a surge in specific product categories, TikTok Shop is quickly positioning itself as a powerful player in the e-commerce landscape.
The forthcoming Black Friday and Cyber Monday events, running from November 11 to November 30, promise to bring a wave of shoppers to TikTok Shop. This year’s shopping frenzy is expected to leverage a user base that has shown an increasing appetite for holiday-related content. Notably, the hashtag #holidayshopping saw a staggering 263% increase in usage in September compared to August, indicating that consumers are actively seeking gift ideas long before the official holiday shopping start.
TikTok Shop is not just a platform for selling; it is becoming a critical space for discovery and inspiration. While users may enter with specific ideas, the platform’s ecosystem enables serendipitous finds, helping to expand their shopping lists with products they never intended to buy. For small business owners, this means their products have the potential to reach buyers looking for something unique. TikTok reported over 100 billion searches with e-commerce intent on its platform in 2025, illustrating the level of engagement available to sellers.
Moreover, TikTok Shop has significantly broadened its product offerings since its U.S. launch, expanding by over 1,200% in product categories. This is beneficial for small businesses, which may find a more diverse marketplace to showcase their goods alongside established brands. Prominent retailers, such as Sephora, Best Buy, and Ulta Beauty, are now on the platform, providing small businesses an opportunity to share space with major names and capture the keen interest of TikTok’s dynamic audience.
Consumer trust is a vital factor for small businesses wanting to make an impact. Research suggests that 67% of U.S. TikTok users hold a favorable view of brands presented on TikTok Shop and, impressively, this figure rises to 82% among users aged 18-24. This creates a trustworthy environment for small businesses to engage with consumers and establish credibility.
Trends are already shaping the upcoming holiday season on TikTok Shop. Pre-owned luxury items are gaining traction, with U.S. TikTok users being 2.5 times more likely to gift a luxury item during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. For small businesses dealing in luxury resale or niche collectibles, this signals a significant opportunity to meet a growing demand for authenticity and uniqueness.
Jewelry sales are also trending, with a notable increase in searches for personalized items, such as friendship bracelets and opal rings. Small jewelry businesses can capitalize on this interest, especially as TikTok Shop offers third-party insurance on eligible jewelry purchases, adding an extra layer of confidence for buyers.
Gaming items are another category seeing momentum. With one in five TikTok users expected to buy gaming devices this holiday season, small businesses in the gaming sector may find this an attractive opportunity to showcase their products and engage with an enthusiastic demographic.
One critical aspect of selling on TikTok Shop is the emerging trend of LIVE Shopping. The format allows businesses to present products, engage in real-time with potential buyers, and demonstrate features directly to an audience, enhancing the shopping experience. TikTok’s data indicates a tremendous growth surge in its LIVE Shopping sessions, with a reported sales surpassing $500 million during last year’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend. This trend indicates that interactivity might be the future of retail on social media platforms, and small business owners should consider how they could incorporate live demonstrations into their marketing strategies.
However, potential challenges exist. For many small businesses, the overwhelming nature of social media can lead to uncertainty. Finding the right approach to create engaging content and connecting with audiences may take time and experimentation. Additionally, as TikTok continues to evolve, it’s important for businesses to stay updated on platform changes to fully leverage its features efficiently.
In terms of logistics, TikTok Shop is making strides to improve user experience around order fulfillment and returns. The introduction of the 3-Day Delivery badge for eligible products is a step towards ensuring customer satisfaction, while the partnerships with Happy Returns offer convenient return options that do not require boxes or labels. For small businesses, these enhancements can also alleviate some logistical burdens when transitioning to an online retail space.
The holiday shopping window is rapidly approaching. By leveraging emerging trends and the unique platform that TikTok Shop offers, small business owners can engage a dedicated and dynamic audience this shopping season.
