The Hong Kong Tourism Board has organised a citywide programme of lantern displays, cultural traditions and festive celebrations for the Mid-Autumn Festival, centred around the theme of 'reunion'.
Hong Kong is encouraging travellers to experience Mid-Autumn Festival like a local through a citywide programme of lantern displays, cultural traditions and festive celebrations.
At the heart of this year's festivities is the first-ever International Lantern Spectacular at Victoria Park, organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), alongside the long-running Tai Hang fire dragon dance and a range of seasonal experiences taking place across the city.
The event is centred around the theme of "reunion" and brings together lantern displays from 20 countries and regions, including traditional Qinhuai lanterns from Nanjing, alongside locally crafted Hong Kong lanterns.
Visitors can explore three main areas at the International Lantern Spectacular.
World Lantern Boulevard features more than 3,000 lanterns from around the world, including silk lanterns from South Korea, colourful patchwork lanterns from Brazil and displays incorporating traditional Polish paper-cutting techniques.
Nanjing Qinhuai Lanterns showcases the centuries-old Chinese lantern-making tradition, with four giant bespoke installations created specially for the event. Highlights include the eight-metre-tall Shadowlight, inspired by Hong Kong's iconic banyan trees, and Lotus Fish, featuring illuminated lotus leaves and brightly coloured carp.
Several displays reflect the festival's theme of togetherness, including Dragon Gate, where two carp form a circular shape representing harmony and good fortune, and Moonlit Lotus, a seven-metre-tall moon lantern overlooking a lotus-filled water display.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong Lantern Galleria celebrates local craftsmanship with more than 400 handcrafted lanterns, recreating the atmosphere of the city's traditional Mid-Autumn celebrations.
Beyond the lantern displays, visitors can witness one of Hong Kong's most famous cultural traditions: the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance.
Now in its 147th edition, the event sees a 67-metre-long dragon illuminated by around 12,000 incense sticks weave through the streets of Tai Hang, accompanied by beating drums and crowds of spectators. The dance is believed to bring blessings and good fortune, and concludes with performers sharing burning incense sticks with onlookers as a gesture of goodwill.
The celebrations extend across Hong Kong throughout the autumn season, with shopping centres, markets and attractions hosting themed activities, large-scale lantern installations, festive dining experiences and seasonal food markets.
The Hong Kong Tourism Board says the programme offers visitors the chance to experience both world-class cultural showcases and neighbourhood traditions, providing a unique insight into one of the city's most important annual festivals.
