Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has reaffirmed his support for the charitable and social work of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia during a meeting with Archbishop Makarios in Athens.
The meeting took place on Friday, October 23, at the Maximos Mansion, the official seat of the Greek prime minister.
Discussions focused on the Archdiocese’s charitable initiatives and social contributions, with Mitsotakis reiterating his full support for the Church’s work.
The two also discussed the role of the Greek Orthodox Church in maintaining and strengthening ties between Greece and the global Greek diaspora.
Postal Voting for Greeks Abroad
During the meeting, Mitsotakis highlighted a significant change for Greeks living overseas, noting that, for the first time, Greek voters abroad would be able to cast their ballots by post from their place of residence in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
The announcement comes as Greece continues to examine ways to facilitate electoral participation among Greeks living outside the country.
The Greek diaspora, including the large Greek Australian community, maintains longstanding cultural, religious and family connections with Greece.
The Archdiocese of Australia plays a central role in preserving Greek language, Orthodox faith, cultural traditions and community life across the country.
The meeting highlighted the relationship between the Greek government and the Church, as well as the importance of maintaining connections with Hellenism worldwide.
