Heavy rain that lasted for about an hour battered several parts of Coimbatore city on Sunday evening (October 18, 2026), inundating arterial roads and low-lying areas. Waterlogging was reported on stretches of Avinashi Road, Mettupalayam Road, Tiruchi Road, Nanjundapuram road and underpasses in the city.
Meanwhile, moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lashed rural parts of Coimbatore district, including Periyanaickenpalayam, Vellanaipatti, Karumathampatti and Thondamuthur, for over an hour. Eachanari, Kuniyamuthur, Kavundampalayam, Podanur and Madukkarai also witnessed moderate to heavy rain.
The heavy downpour on the eve of Ayudha Puja brought Coimbatore city to a standstill as people had come to markets and other commercial areas for purchases. The flooding of roads, including several underpasses of railway tracks, added to the traffic blocks in many areas. Two-wheeler riders and pedestrians struggled to pass through the inundated stretches. At Kavundampalayam, two-wheelers parked on the road side were seen carried away by the inundated water.
Minister for Backward Classes Welfare V. Sampath Kumar inspected residential areas that were inundated at Sanganoor. He instructed officials with the district administration and the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation to take appropriate remedial measures.
Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja and other senior officials also inspected inundated areas in the city, including the busy Lanka Corner.
