Overview:
Heavy startup processes and limited system resources can delay application launches on Windows computers.
Slow storage, background applications and network-dependent loading can make programs less responsive.
Updating software, checking Task Manager and optimizing startup tasks may improve application launch speeds.
Opening an app on Windows can take longer than expected, particularly when several programs are already running. Microsoft is now working to reduce one source of delay in Windows 11: an unnecessary intermediate process that can slow down the launch of applications already running in the background.
Microsoft is introducing the change through an accelerated app launch feature, with Microsoft Edge among the first applications to use it. The approach aims to shorten the launch process without keeping additional applications running in memory.
Why do Apps Take Time to Open in Windows?
Launching an application involves more than clicking its icon. Windows must start or activate the relevant process, while the application loads the resources, files, and components needed to display its interface.
Microsoft identifies several stages in application startup, including launching the process, creating the window, building the initial page, and rendering the first frame. The time it takes to complete these steps affects how quickly users can start interacting with an app.
Applications can also slow down when they do too much work before displaying their initial screen. Loading unnecessary components, processing configuration files, and waiting for online data can delay the appearance of usable content. Microsoft recommends postponing non-essential tasks until after the initial interface becomes interactive.

How an Extra Process Can Slow Down App Launches
Microsoft is addressing a problem with applications designed to run as a single instance. When a user opens such an application again, Windows may start a temporary process that checks whether the application is already running.
That temporary process then passes the request to the existing application and exits. Although this lets Windows activate the original window rather than open another instance, the extra step can add latency, especially when the computer is already handling several tasks.
Microsoft’s accelerated app launch feature removes this intermediary step for supported launch scenarios. Instead of starting a temporary process, Windows can direct the request to the running application’s registered window. The goal is to reduce the time between a user’s action and the application’s response.
Microsoft Edge Gets The New Launch Feature
Microsoft introduced accelerated app launches for Edge through a gradual rollout to Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel. According to Windows Latest, the feature appeared in the Windows 11 update released on October 16, 2026, covering builds 26200.9807 for version 25H2 and 26300.9807 for version 26H2.
The improvement primarily benefits warm launches, when Edge is already running in the background. It does not necessarily speed up the first launch after a computer restarts. The feature’s availability also depends on the gradual rollout, so installing the update does not guarantee immediate access.
Microsoft’s developer documentation indicates that accelerated launches require application developers to register for the feature. The relevant APIs have limited access, and developers must obtain an unlock token. Support also depends on the launch method and the application maintaining its own single-instance handling.
This means the change will not automatically make every Windows application launch faster. Other applications must implement the necessary support to benefit from the same approach.

Background Apps and Startup Activity Also Matter
The extra-process issue is only one factor affecting Windows performance. Applications that start automatically when users sign in can compete for processor and disk resources, potentially delaying other tasks. Microsoft recommends reviewing unnecessary startup processes and reducing background activity where possible.
Windows already uses background preparation in some applications. Edge’s Startup Boost keeps core browser processes ready after the browser is closed. Accelerated launches take a different approach by eliminating an unnecessary step rather than relying solely on keeping processes active.
What Change Means for Windows Users
Microsoft’s approach could make supported applications feel more responsive, especially on busy computers. However, the benefits will depend on application support, launch conditions, and system performance.
For users, the broader lesson is that slow launches do not always mean a computer needs an upgrade. Background activity, application design, storage access, and network-dependent tasks can all contribute to delays. Reducing unnecessary work and improving how Windows activates existing applications may help deliver a faster experience without adding more background processes.
FAQs
1. Why do apps take so long to open in Windows?
Apps may launch slowly because of limited RAM, heavy startup processes, slow storage drives, background applications or network connectivity issues.
2. How can I check what is slowing down my Windows computer?
Open Task Manager using Ctrl + Shift + Esc to monitor CPU, memory and disk usage and identify resource-intensive applications.
3. Can background applications slow down app launches in Windows?
Yes, background applications consume memory, processing power and disk resources, potentially delaying other programs when system resources become limited.
4. Do outdated drivers affect application launch speeds?
Outdated drivers and software can cause compatibility or performance issues. Installing available updates may resolve certain application launch problems.
5. How can developers make Windows applications launch faster?
Developers can reduce startup dependencies, load essential interface elements first, postpone non-essential tasks and perform lengthy operations asynchronously.
