Angel Reese didn't point fingers after the Atlanta Dream let the opening game of the 2026 WNBA Finals slip away.
Instead, the star forward turned the spotlight on herself after a second-half scoring drought helped the Golden State Valkyries secure a 68-64 victory on Saturday.
Angel Reese turned all heads and raised temperatures with her sexiest WNBA playoff looks
Atlanta appeared to be in control for much of the contest at Chase Center. Reese gave the Dream an early spark, scoring 11 points in the first quarter as her team built a substantial advantage.
But the Valkyries gradually fought their way back into the game, and Atlanta couldn't find enough offense down the stretch to protect its lead.
Reese finished with 14 points, 12 rebounds, two steals and one block, recording another double-double on the biggest stage of her young career.
Yet her final line told only part of the story. After making an immediate impact early, she failed to score in the second half, leaving Atlanta without one of its most important offensive options when the game tightened.
Asked after the loss what Golden State had done to limit her production, Reese rejected the idea that the Valkyries deserved all the credit for her quiet finish.
"I don't think they really did anything," Reese said. "Maybe that's just on me. I wasn't aggressive enough with the ball and trying to get the ball and get to my spots."
Her response placed the emphasis on what she could change rather than on the opposing defense. It also offered a clear indication of what she wants to correct before the teams meet again.
Atlanta offense stalled as Golden State found opening
The shot numbers help explain Reese's frustration. She attempted nine shots in the first half, making five of them, but took only two attempts across nearly 18 minutes after the break.
For a player who had established herself as an early scoring threat, that dramatic drop in involvement became a significant problem for Atlanta.
Reese's ability to attack the paint and create second chances is central to the Dream's identity. Her rebounding gives Atlanta extra possessions, while her physical presence near the basket can force defenses to adjust.
When she stops looking for her own shot, however, opponents can devote more attention to the team's other scorers.
Golden State took advantage of the changing momentum. Gabby Williams delivered a game-high 26 points, including crucial free throws late in the fourth quarter, to help the Valkyries complete the comeback.
No other Golden State player reached double figures, but the team's bench outscored Atlanta's reserves 20-6, providing a major advantage in a tightly contested game.
Allisha Gray led Atlanta with 19 points, while Rhyne Howard added 12. Even with those contributions, the Dream struggled to generate consistent offense late in the game.
Atlanta scored only eight points in the fourth quarter and missed several opportunities to reclaim the lead in the closing minutes.
The result was particularly frustrating because the Dream had put themselves in a strong position. They entered the final period ahead by five points, but Golden State's defensive pressure and late execution changed the outcome.
