Autumn comes with its own nail prescription. Think: deep moody hues, rich velvety textures, and designs that speaks to the tone of the season. While the leaves have only just begun to turn crunchy, we've already pinned a wave of new nail inspiration to our mood boards. This season's biggest nail trends span fawn-core Bambi print, burgundy laden merlot manicures, and juicy jammy nails. Plus, Olivia Colman's new chic black negative space design will give you reason to rethink your Halloween set. That said, if you're a true minimalist manicure loyalist (we don't blame you), allow us to introduce you to your next obsession. Enter: 'blushing nails'.
They were caught at the Acne Studios Spring/Summer 2027 women's show last month, when models were sent down the runway with hair rooted in a mix of early 17th century and New Romantic elements. It crept into make-up too, with a monochrome wash of icy rose flushed across the cheeks, eyes and brows. It made for a strong beauty look, one that required nails to play into that strength without overwhelming it.
Nail artist, Cam Tran, was tasked with creating a set that would complement the overall beauty memo without competing with it. She came up with an understated design that elevates a neutral manicure with a high-shine, translucent glowy finish marked only by a soft pink ombre or 'aura' effect in the centre of the nail. Glossy, dewy, and radiant, they speak to the clean girl-coded glass nail trend and the beauty world's ongoing obsession with an ethereal, watercolour blur.
When working up the look, Tran explains, 'I immediately thought about that little flush of colour you sometimes get on your fingertips when applying blush with your hands. I took that idea and slightly reworked it, placing the colour right in the centre of the nail, almost mirroring the placement of blush in the centre of the cheeks. I wanted it to feel subtle, soft and discreet, but still intentional enough to complete the entire beauty look without doing too much.'
While they are a perfect year-round nail choice, blushing nails are also especially current for right now. 'They are simple, soft, and fit perfectly into the more minimal, effortless approach to nails that we’re seeing right now. Plus, you can match your blush to it for a cohesive beauty moment. I think my clean-girl girls will definitely love this one — it’s polished, but still very subtle and easy to wear,' Tran adds.
What are blushing nails?
The key feature is that soft, diffused flush of colour concentrated in the centre of the nail. There shouldn’t be any harsh edges, the colour almost looks as though it’s naturally blooming through the nail. The rest of the nail appears quite sheer and clean, which creates that soft-focus contrast. It’s almost like applying make-up to the nail rather than simply painting it.
How to recreate blushing nails
Start with a really clean, beautiful manicure and prep the nails properly. Add a base coat like Manucurist's Active Smooth, £16.
Tran used an airbrush for the show to create the central flush, but you can achieve a similar effect with a sponge. Place a drop of colour onto it, dab off the excess, then gently tap it onto the centre of the nail. Repeat the process a few times, letting each layer dry in between.
For the final layer of flush, use a slightly darker shade. It helps to create a softer, more diffused effect.
Apply a generous layer of top coat and allow it to dry.
Finish with a little cuticle oil.
