KUALA LUMPUR: Versatile entertainer Helmi Gimmick, 65, has urged fellow senior performers to put their health first and turn down work when they feel unwell.
The entertainer, whose real name is Harun Tahir, admitted that pushing himself to work for money caused him to delay seeing a doctor, which eventually led to a stage four kidney cancer diagnosis.
"To fellow artistes and celebrities who feel unwell, I strongly advise you to immediately undergo a health check-up at a clinic or hospital.
"Never be complacent or delay treatment in the early stages—especially for those of us who are older and classified as senior citizens, as our body's metabolism naturally declines.
"So, if you feel any physical discomfort—even minor aches—seek early treatment. Do not be obsessed with working for money at the expense of adequate rest. Believe me, early treatment is crucial," he told Harian Metro recently.
The father of four and grandfather of three is thankful that doctors have now declared him cancer-free, despite how serious the illness was when it was first found.
"Looking back, doctors had actually advised me to seek treatment for my condition much earlier. However, I took it lightly—thinking minor aches were nothing—because I enjoyed working and entertaining people.
"I kept putting it off until I fell seriously ill after hosting a dinner event for the Malaysian Artistes Association (Karyawan) on Dec 27 last year. After being rushed to the hospital and treated, doctors informed me that I had stage four kidney cancer.
"But God has granted me a second chance to recover and become cancer-free. To my friends, please prioritise self-care; once illness strikes, the blessing of good health is lost," he said.
Helmi underwent successful surgery to remove his left kidney at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Hospital (HSAAS) in Serdang on Jan 9.
He was discharged on Jan 19 to recover, which initially involved attending weekly specialist check-ups.
Now, he only needs to visit the hospital for monthly follow-ups.
His routine involves taking one type of medicine, eating healthily, and staying active.
Helmi has spent over 30 years in show business as a radio presenter and host.
He is fluent in several languages, including English, Mandarin, and Tamil, alongside some knowledge of French.
