Saints Put on Blast by Owner Gayle Benson Amid 1-4 Start

The New Orleans Saints are seemingly heading in the wrong direction after suffering their third straight loss in Week 5 to the Minnesota Vikings. As a result, Saints owner Gayle Benson issued a public statement expressing her disappointment in the team's results.

The defensive side of the ball has been the biggest issue for this Saints team on paper, allowing 30.2 points per game, the second-most points allowed per game in the NFL thus far this season.

There have been obvious issues on offense as well, as the Saints are averaging the fourth-least rushing yards per game and have turned over the ball the second-most of any team in football.

Discussing the team's issues on Tuesday, Gayle Benson made it incredibly clear that she believes that the fanbase in New Orleans "deserve(s) better" than what the team has produced this season.

"I want to address where we stand," said Benson during the Greater New Orleans QB Club luncheon. "1-4, that is not acceptable to me. We have fallen short of what our fans truly deserve. I hear the frustration directed toward our team. It is not lost on me. Our fans invest their time and their hearts into the Saints. They are right to expect more than what we have delivered. As an owner, the responsibility does fall on me. I will not make excused and I will not accept this level of performance as our standard."

These are obviously some very strong words from Benson. And it sure seems like some significant changes could come if things don't turn around in a hurry for the Saints.

With these comments from Benson in mind, it sure seems crucial for Saints head coach Kellen Moore to turn the ship around as soon as possible.

Fortunately, there are some positives to speak of for Saints fans. Despite the 1-4 start, they find themselves squarely in the mix in the NFC South, where no team has really emerged as an obvious team to beat.

Kellen Moore and the Saints will look to start the process of digging out of the early hole they have dug themselves into in Week 6, where they will head to New York to take on the New York Giants.
