TORONTO — When Samsung initially introduced the Galaxy Fold in 2019, it challenged long-held ideas about what a smartphone could be and the internet had opinions. Consumers and reviewers were skeptical whether foldables were too experimental, too fragile or unlikely to become everyday devices.
Fast forward eight years, the category is now moving into the mainstream and many Canadians are encountering foldables for the first time. Samsung Canada is inviting people to revisit those early assumptions and consider whether it is time to make the switch.
The skepticism and questions Canadians are raising about foldables today are not new. To put those early assumptions to the test, Samsung Canada is bringing some of the category’s first reactions back into the conversation. Technology reviewers Karl Conrad (@karlconrad), Unbox Therapy (@unboxtherapy) and Linus Media Group (@linustechtips) are returning to their earliest foldable reviews, spending time with the latest Galaxy Z Fold8 and sharing whether eight years of innovation have changed their perspective. The initiative builds on Samsung Canada’s Ask Us Anything initiative, helping Canadians explore the world of foldables, address their questions and reconsider the category.

“Samsung has spent eight years listening, learning and advancing what foldable smartphones can do,” said Tarik Akad, Vice President, Mobile Experience, Samsung Canada. “Many Canadians who are discovering foldables today have the same questions that consumers and reviewers asked at the beginning. Revisiting early impressions has shown us how innovation can reshape expectations and open new possibilities for how people experience their smartphones.”
Karl’s original verdict captured the uncertainty surrounding foldables eight years ago. He questioned whether folding phones were built to last and predicted they were destined to be a passing fad. Now, he returns to his first impression and considers how it holds up in his Re-Review – putting the latest Galaxy Z Fold8 through its paces and revealing whether eight years of innovation were enough to change his mind.
Karl’s verdict is just the beginning. More videos will roll out across participating reviewers’ channels throughout November, bringing fresh perspective to the foldable conversations that started it all. Canadians can follow #GalaxyAskUsAnything and @SamsungCanada to participate in the conversations around foldables, rethink their own assumptions and see whether the latest Galaxy Z Fold8 might be the right switch for them.
