Aizawl, Oct 17: Mari ZT Lalrithangi, a 35-year-old teacher-turned-strawberry farmer from Sangau village in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district, has been honoured by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Rome for her remarkable success in fruit cultivation. She was named among the FAO 100 Women Heroes in Agrifood Systems and Rural Development during the World Food Forum on October 15, as part of the International Year of Women Farmers 2026.
Lalrithangi, the first Mizo woman to receive this recognition, was selected from over 600 nominees across 131 countries, with only two women from India making the list. Expressing gratitude, she credited God’s guidance, her family’s support, and the state Horticulture department for the achievement.
Her journey began in 2024 with 1,000 strawberry saplings, inspired by growers in neighbouring Siaha district. Within two years, she expanded to more than 10,000 plants across two hectares, earning over Rs 10 lakh in 2025. Beyond selling fresh produce, she diversified into strawberry wine and candy, which found buyers in local markets.
A postgraduate in Sociology from IGNOU, Lalrithangi had previously worked as a private-school teacher and attempted competitive examinations before turning to farming. She taught herself cultivation techniques through online tutorials, often studying late at night while caring for her three children. Supported by her husband, a primary school teacher, and her in-laws, she has steadily built a sustainable livelihood.
Her efforts were earlier recognised at the Mizoram Horti Fair 2026, where she was adjudged the best farmer from Lawngtlai district. Lalrithangi’s story reflects resilience, innovation, and the growing role of women in shaping agrifood systems.
