The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has taken notice of alleged irregularities in the country’s power sector and launched numerous cases at the federal level, Chairman NAB Lieutenant General (retd) Nazir Ahmed said.
Briefing journalists alongside the director general of operations and other officials, the NAB chairman said action would be taken against power plants found to have defrauded the state.
He said the bureau was also planning action over irregularities in the mines and minerals sector and the Auqaf department.
He also announced a crackdown on illegal occupants of state-owned land, saying the bureau now had verified land records available at its offices.
“We are no longer affected by fires breaking out in buildings,” he said, referring to the availability of land records.
The chairman said NAB’s priority had always been to facilitate recoveries wherever possible.
He claimed that the bureau had recovered state assets worth Rs.14.6 trillion so far this year; these included railway land valued at Rs.6.78 trillion.
The chairman added that 866,299 acres of land belonging to provincial government departments had also been recovered.
The land was valued at Rs.2.395 trillion, according to his statement.
In another announcement, the NAB chairman said the bureau had introduced an artificial intelligence-based investigation system called “NAB AI” to support its investigative work.
