The Emmy-winning actor, producer and entrepreneur, Lauren Palmer, known professionally as Keke Palmer, has been named the University of California, Los Angeles School of Theatre, Film and Television’s artist in residence for the 2026–27 academic year. The sessions will explore artistic identity, creative ownership and community, and will take place at Freud Playhouse on campus. The residency forms part of a five-year partnership with Palmer’s digital media network, KeyTV, announced by UCLA in June 2026.
Keke Palmer’s UCLA residency: Three sessions on creative identity, ownership and community
UCLA TFT’s August announcement sets out three quarterly sessions for the 2026–27 academic year under the title Know Yourself, Own Yourself, Free Yourself to Build New Frameworks for Change.
The sessions will be held at Freud Playhouse on campus and are open to TFT students. Dean Celine Parreñas Shimizu will curate the programme and moderate the sessions, which will include assigned readings. The fall 2026 session, “Your Voice.
Our Story.”, will examine self-perception, public perception and artistic voice. The winter 2027 session, “Owning Your Creative Power”, will focus on Palmer’s experience building KeyTV and responding to gaps in the entertainment industry.
The spring 2027 session, “The Modern Multi-Hyphenate: Freedom Through Community”, will explore her work across acting, producing, entrepreneurship, media and authorship, with an emphasis on creative independence and community. UCLA’s June 11 announcement describes KeyTV as the distribution platform for selected student projects, connecting work developed through the partnership with audiences beyond the classroom.
The collaboration brings together UCLA’s production training and Palmer’s experience in entertainment and digital media.
KeyTV and UCLA student content: How the partnership plans to distribute projects
UCLA’s June 11 announcement says Palmer co-founded KeyTV in 2021 and that the network launched in November 2022. The release reported that KeyTV had produced 29 projects since its launch and described its productions as BIPOC-creator-led. UCLA’s June 11 announcement says KeyTV plans to distribute at least three student projects each year, subject to quality review.
The arrangement is intended to expose students to aspects of the media business beyond production, including packaging, marketing and digital audience engagement.
What the Keke Palmer-UCLA partnership does not yet specify
Although the announcement outlines the programme’s structure and distribution plans, it leaves several practical questions unanswered. It does not explain how students will be selected for the studio course, whether participation will be open to students across different majors, or what application deadlines and academic-credit requirements will apply.
The announcement describes the studio course as fully sponsored but does not identify the source of its funding.
It also does not specify who will own the completed projects, what rights KeyTV will receive, or whether students will be paid if their work is distributed. The quality-review process for projects considered for KeyTV distribution is another detail that remains unspecified. The June announcement also outlines a fully sponsored studio course planned for the 2027–28 academic year.
With Palmer mentoring students, the course is expected to support projects including video podcasts, television pilots, music videos and musical or dance-theatre productions. KeyTV is intended to provide a distribution route for selected work produced through the collaboration. These questions matter because the collaboration combines university instruction with the distribution of creative work through an external media platform.
The programme’s eventual value to students will depend not only on access to mentorship and production experience but also on how project selection, ownership and distribution are handled. The programme will unfold in stages. Quarterly workshops are scheduled for the 2026-27 academic year, while the studio course is due to begin in 2027-28. The announcement does not provide detailed dates for individual workshops or explain when students can apply for the course. Reporting by The Hollywood Reporter has also described the plan as involving mentorship and the production of selected student projects under Palmer’s KeyTV banner.
The five-year term gives UCLA and KeyTV time to develop the collaboration across multiple academic years, although the programme’s outcomes will become clearer as the workshops and studio course get underway.
