Lionel Scaloni has agreed to extend his contract as Argentina head coach until the 2030 World Cup, keeping him in charge of the national team beyond December 2026, when his previous deal was due to expire, according to Argentine journalist Cesar Luis Melo.
The agreement ends speculation over Scaloni's future following an emotionally demanding period with the national team. His long-term commitment had been uncertain amid questions over whether he would take a break from the pressure of managing one of international football's most successful teams.
Scaloni's future also came under scrutiny following Lionel Messi's retirement from international football, raising questions about Argentina's transition into a new era.
The contract extension means the 48-year-old will have the opportunity to oversee that transition and guide Argentina towards the 2030 tournament.
Since taking charge in 2018, Scaloni has transformed Argentina into a dominant force in international football. He led the team to the 2021 Copa America, the 2022 Finalissima and the 2022 World Cup, ending the country's 36-year wait for football's biggest prize.
Argentina won another Copa America title in 2024 under Scaloni. They also reached the final of the 2026 World Cup but lost to Spain.
Scaloni has managed Argentina in 105 matches, recording 81 wins, 14 draws and 10 defeats.
Argentina have won their last three matches since the World Cup final defeat to Spain, scoring 14 goals without conceding.
The extension provides continuity for Argentina as they prepare for the next phase of their international campaign.
