The New York Jets are coming off their best defensive performance of the season; however, their next challenge could be a completely different test. A divisional matchup against the New England Patriots puts Aaron Glenn’s improving defense up against a quarterback who has started finding his rhythm again after a rocky opening stretch.
The Jets have reasons to feel good about their recent progress. Yet, Glenn knows one strong performance doesn’t guarantee anything against an opponent with the talent to turn things around quickly.
Aaron Glenn warns Jets not to underestimate Drake Maye
Glenn delivered a clear message about the Patriots quarterback Drake Maye ahead of the teams’ Week 6 clash, warning that the Jets cannot expect the young passer to remain stuck in his early-season struggles.
“At some point, guys are gonna go back to exactly who they are. They will never stay in that rut for a long time, especially a guy of that magnitude. It’s something that we have to watch out for. We have to go out there and compete our ass off”

The Jets head coach emphasized that his defense must be ready for Maye at his best rather than relying on the mistakes that plagued the QB earlier this season.
That warning comes after Maye delivered back-to-back impressive performances in victories over the Buffalo Bills and Las Vegas Raiders. The Patriots averaged 37 points across those wins, while Maye threw for 643 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception. He also added a rushing touchdown during that stretch.
The turnaround has been significant. Through his first three games, Maye threw just one touchdown pass while committing eight turnovers, including six interceptions and two lost fumbles. The Patriots’ 35-6 defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3 raised questions about his decision-making, but his recent performances have offered a strong response.
His deep passing game has been particularly encouraging. In the game against the Raiders, Maye connected on six of nine throws, going at least 15 yards downfield for 182 yards and two touchdowns. This is an ability that could trouble a New York defense that needs to be disciplined.
However, there are some things that Glenn does not need to worry about because of his defense. For example, the Jets recorded eight sacks and allowed just 198 yards in a 17-12 victory against the Cleveland Browns in Week 5. Under Glenn’s leadership, the defense has caused trouble for the opposition’s quarterback with disguised blitzes and rushers from unusual spots.
Now the problem is that Glenn will have to find a way to continue his aggressive approach against a quarterback with newfound confidence.
For Glenn, the message is straightforward: New York cannot afford to mistake Maye’s early struggles for his true level. The Patriots quarterback is finding his form again, and the Jets will need another complete defensive performance to slow him down.
