Sharo Jay, whose YouTube channel had only about 1,800 subscribers despite featuring more than 140 videos, met Somali YouTuber Cumeer Bigfan while he was filming a street video in the Malaysian capital.
The two struck up a conversation, with Cumeer asking her how many subscribers she had accumulated on the video-sharing platform.
Sharo revealed that she had just 1,800 subscribers, leaving him surprised to learn that she had continued producing vlogs using her own money despite not earning anything from YouTube.
The Kenyan content creator also asked Cumeer about his following. He showed her his YouTube channel, which had approximately one million subscribers, leaving her astonished by the popularity of the man she had been chatting with.
The interaction took an unexpected turn when Cumeer asked her how many subscribers she wanted the Somali community to help her gain.
Sharo requested 10,000 subscribers, seemingly uncertain whether the target was achievable. However, the response was far greater than she had anticipated.
Within just a few hours, her channel reportedly gained tens of thousands of subscribers, with the growth approaching 50,000 before later accounts put the increase at nearly 60,000.
A video featuring Cumeer appealing to Somalis to subscribe to the Kenyan woman's channel helped introduce her content to a much wider audience.
The response left the creator overwhelmed. In a subsequent video, Sharo broke down in tears as she thanked members of the Somali community for their overwhelming support.

Before the encounter, she had already uploaded more than 140 videos, some lasting over an hour, but had struggled to attract a substantial audience.
Her experience highlights the difficulties smaller content creators can face while investing their time and money in producing online content without a guaranteed financial return.
It also demonstrates how a single viral moment, combined with the reach of an established creator and the collective action of an online community, can dramatically change a budding YouTuber's fortunes.
For the Kenyan woman, what began as an ordinary street interaction in a foreign country became an unexpected breakthrough in her journey as a content creator.
