Kelsey Plum spoke highly about the Golden State Valkyries star Gabby Williams, as she stated that the French national player has been one of the best players in the world for the last few years.
The 30-year-old has been a key part of what the Valkyries have built. After a stellar regular season, she is dropping elite performances in the playoffs as well. Williams scored 26 points in Game 1 of the Finals to help the Valks take a 1-0 lead.
Alongside being a solid scorer, she is also one of the best defenders in the league. She finished second behind Angel Reese on the final list, but Williams proved herself in the FIBA World Cup, where she was named the defensive player of the tournament.
As she leads her team in the WNBA Finals, the two-time All-Star is getting praise from a two-time WNBA champion, Plum.
Kelsey Plum believes Gabby Williams is finally getting the chance to showcase her talent
Prior to her time with the Valkyries, Williams was with the Seattle Storm for three years. Playing alongside Skylar Diggins and Nneka Ogwumike, Williams was not really able to play to her full potential.
However, in Europe, the 30-year-old was winning individual laurels and championships, which Plum pointed out while talking about her brilliance.
“WNBA fans are now getting a taste of who Gabby Williams is, but if you’ve played overseas or watched Gabby for years, Gabby’s been one of the best players in the world for the last four or five years. Watching Gabby and her evolution in the W, In Seattle she never got the opportunity to iso at the top of the key, just wasn’t that she couldn’t do it, it’s just that wasn’t her role, it’s awesome to see somebody that basically just like waited her turn, but has always played the right way,” said Plum on the Road Trippin Show.
“Gabby’s always been an extremely smart, competitive, play both sides of the ball basketball player and I think Natalie Nakase has just been like, ‘Hey listen, we are going to throw you the keys, take off,'”
Williams has won two EuroLeague championships, and she has been successful in every country she has decided to play. Although her WNBA resume might not be very attractive yet, she is one of the most respected players in the league because of what she can do on the basketball court.
The Valkyries will hope that the player continues delivering and leads the team to a championship. Currently, with the series tied at 1-1, it will be interesting to see which team wins the next game and takes the lead going into Game 4.
