The Ice Caves in Minecraft are becoming more dangerous with each passing week, as the Brittle Ice block has just made its appearance among the experimental features. Unlike regular Ice, this new block starts cracking when you stand on it and eventually breaks. So, if you thought you knew the Ice Caves biome by heart, here is everything you need to know about the Minecraft Brittle Ice block, how to get it, and more.
Items Required to Make and Mine Brittle Ice in Minecraft
Before you start making Brittle Ice in the upcoming Minecraft 26.4 update, you’ll need a few basic resources. Thankfully, unlike most Minecraft farms that require an entire chest of Redstone components, this one requires a minimal setup. So, here’s all that you need:
| Required Items | Quantity | Where to Get |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Ice | 1 | Find these at the bottom of Icebergs and underneath frozen ocean biomes |
| Water Bucket | 1 | Use an empty iron bucket on a body of water to pick it up |
| Pickaxe with Silk Touch | 1 | Get the Minecraft Silk Touch enchantment on any pickaxe of your choice, preferably Diamond. |
Note that getting the Silk Touch enchantment on your pickaxe or any other tool is mandatory because it will help break the Brittle Ice block and drop it as an item. Without the enchantment, your tool will simply break the block, and it’ll disappear.
How to Make Brittle Ice with Blue Ice and Water in Minecraft
Now that you have collected the required materials, it is time to create your own Brittle Ice generator. This method eliminates the need to repeatedly explore the Minecraft Ice Caves, allowing you to farm as many blocks as you want from your own base. Follow the steps below to make Brittle Ice:
Step 1: Craft an Iron Bucket and Pick Up Water
- To make a bucket in Minecraft, you need to place 3 Iron Ingots in a V shape on the Crafting Table grid.
- Place one at the top-left cell, one at the top-right cell, and the third one at the center to create the bucket.
- Once made, head to any river or body of water, and interact with the surface with the bucket in your hand to pick up water.
Step 2: Get Blue Ice from Icebergs
- Head to the bottom of the Icebergs or the frozen ocean biomes of Minecraft to find the Blue Ice blocks for your generator.
- Use a Pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch to break the Blue Ice block and head back to your place where you want to create Brittle Ice.
Step 3: Create a Brittle Ice Generator
- Find a flat area and dig a small channel to control the flow of water.
- Place a single Blue Ice block at one end of your setup.
- Use the water bucket to release water on the other end so that it flows directly against the Blue Ice block.
- A block of Brittle Ice will generate before the Blue Ice.
- You can now use the Silk Touch enchanted pickaxe to break the block and pick it up.
- Since Brittle Ice will keep on generating, you can repeat the process for more such blocks.
Alternate Ways to Find and Get Brittle Ice in Minecraft
If you want to explore the game and find some Brittle Ice blocks yourselves through this risk-reward feature, the best place to look is the new Ice Caves biome. However, beware of the several cave mobs in Minecraft that can spawn here.
Brittle Ice appears over the crevasses, which are narrow openings and fissures carved into the cave floor. These formations can create dangerous sections of terrain that can otherwise seem like any ordinary-looking icy surface. Here are some easy steps to get Brittle Ice from the Ice Caves:
- Explore the underground Cave system, particularly those beneath the colder biomes.
- Look for crevasses covering the slightly transparent ice blocks.
- Carefully approach the formation and identify the Brittle Ice blocks that have small cracks on their surfaces.
- Do not stand on Brittle Ice; instead, stand on a nearby solid block and then use your Silk Touch pickaxe to break it.
- Explore other crevasses to obtain more Brittle Ice while also keeping your eyes open for the Frostbite zombie mobs in Minecraft.
All Uses of Brittle Ice in Minecraft
Brittle Ice isn’t just another decorative block that you would craft and store in your inventory. It has a unique mechanic of breaking when an entity stands on top of it. Map creators and builders already have a ton of ideas for unique setups using Brittle Ice. So, here’s what you can do:
Create Collapsing Floors and Parkour Challenges
Brittle Ice progresses through its cracking stages every second when one stands on it before eventually breaking. Once it breaks, the adjacent Brittle Ice blocks also advance by one cracking stage, creating a chain reaction.
This makes the block perfect for custom parkour maps in Minecraft where the player must keep moving rather than carefully planning their jumps.
Build Traps for Players and Hostile Mobs
Want to give your friends a reason to question every block in your Minecraft base? Brittle Ice blocks are your perfect option.
One way to counter falling into the abyss when there is Brittle Ice all over the area is to use non-entity blocks to traverse. This includes boats, minecarts, cushions, and more. Among them, using a boat in Minecraft is the best choice to slide down the icy blocks and never fall down.
Create Frostbite Exclusive Pathways
One of the coolest interactions involves the new Frostbite mobs that can walk over Brittle Ice without breaking it. This gives them a unique advantage to chase you inside the caves biome.
You could use this behavior to create mob-specific pathways, themed adventure maps, or survival challenges where Frostbite can safely cross areas that collapse upon your touch.
And that completes the guide on how to make Brittle Ice blocks in Minecraft, where to find it, and all of its uses. So, how are you going to use it in the game? Tell us in the comments below.
