What Cason Wallace’s New Contract Means for the OKC Thunder

On Sunday night, Thunder fans received good news in the form of Cason Wallace’s new extension, which is set to keep the guard in Oklahoma City for the next half-decade.

It came down to the wire, with the deadline to get a deal done standing at 5 p.m. Monday. But per ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Thunder and Wallace officially agreed on a five-year, $139 million deal.

The Thunder have now completed a critical deal ahead of an important season. But what does it actually mean for the team moving forward?

Wallace, drafted at No. 10 in the 2023 NBA Draft, has become a defensive staple for the Thunder in the past several season. Most recently, he was named to the All-Defense Second-Team, having come away with 1.9 steals and plenty of defensive highlights to show for it.

For now, it means that OKC has inked another of its talented contributors to a long-term deal, cementing a core nearly into the 2030’s. The Thunder had previously inked two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, as well as his co-stars in Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams to max deals.

Moreover, Wallace is among the best young defensive guards in the NBA, and has been widely expected to get better on the offensive end of the court in the coming years. This deal means that the Thunder themselves certainly believe that to be the case, likely fine with adding him to the starting lineup for the foreseeable future.

With former starting mainstay Luguentz Dort traded to Atlanta in the offseason, Wallace’s value is likely to skyrocket in the Thunder system. Especially with fellow defensive ace Alex Caruso at 32.

“Critical extension for the Thunder to lock in Wallace ahead of restricted free agency next summer,” Charania wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Now having their starting five all under contract for several years.”

Contractually, Wallace will now be making $27.8 million per year with OKC, which could potentially further handicap them financially. Wallace will almost certainly need to blossom on offense to make it worth it, though the blooming contracts across the league still place him in a valuable range. In the least, the Thunder maintained top, recently-developed talent in house for the forseeable future.

The Thunder open their season against the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday, Oct. 20. After losing in a seven-game series against the very same team months ago, they'll now tip off again at 8:30 p.m. CT Tuesday.
