Over recent years there have been some significant changes made to the format of the NFL and more could be set to follow.
Roger Goodell is attempting to make the NFL as big as possible and continue its growth across the world. This has seen more and more games played internationally with nine games from the 2026 season being played away from US soil.
Another significant change came back in 2021 when the regular season was increased to a 17-game schedule. Again, there is scope for this to take yet another step with an 18 regular season game being discussed by the league.
With potential for more games to be played, Mike Florio has mooted the possibility that the NFL is experimenting with the schedule right now as they consider potentially playing games on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in the future.

As an 18th regular season game continues to be considered, changes to the schedule would have to be made to accommodate the extra week. This could result in games being played throughout the week rather than Thursday to Monday.
“Peeking ahead on the Bears’ schedule, I noticed something that I have been noticing a lot this year. Because I’ve never noticed it in the past, I’m assuming it wasn’t there to notice in the same way it’s now noticeable.
?We are in the midst of three straight Cowboys games in prime time. We have had three straight Falcons games in prime time. The Eagles are having two straight. It’s interesting, man: prime time coming up Monday and Sunday,” said Florio on Pro Football Talk.
“Here’s my hypothesis, because, look, it may just be random. It may just be, but when that many teams are getting three in a row in prime time, I wonder if they are experimenting with having the same team in prime time for multiple weeks (for if and when they ever fully embrace Tuesday and Wednesday night).
“If you do that, the only way to make the schedule work is to have a team play Thursday one week, Wednesday the next week, Tuesday the next week, to give them maximum time between games. You’re going to have to do this surgery to the schedule that has the same teams popping up again. Once you have teams playing in the middle of the week, then maybe you say, “Interesting Monday,” and then they go back to Sunday, right?”
There is potential for the NFL to take on a similar scheduling programme to the NBA where games would be played on just about every day of the week. Saturday would remain off the cards as college football is played then but the weekdays could be filled with evening games.
How well this would go down with fans across the league remains to be seen as it would certainly eat into Sunday’s schedule which a lot of fans enjoy sitting back and taking in multiple games through RedZone.
