The Mayoral Clean-Up campaign continued Saturday morning in Katutura East, with residents and municipal teams working side by side around Gemeente Bus Stop and Shanghai Street.
The initiative was led by City of Windhoek councillors Alderwoman Fransina Kahungu and Toini Ambabi, together with Katutura East constituency councillor Richard !Gaoseb.
Hundreds of volunteers cleaned up public surroundings, cleared riverbeds and emptied skip containers, which tend to fill quickly in densely populated neighbourhoods.
Kahungu, who chairs the Council Committee on Provision of Basic Services, thanked residents for the impressive turnout and commended them for their efforts to keep their neighbourhoods clean.
The campaign, which moves from one part of the city to another, relies on community participation to complement the municipality’s regular waste management services.
City of Windhoek Public Relations Officer Lydia Amutenya said last weekend’s clean-up campaign was a huge success as residents came out in numbers to support the initiative.
“It was a success, we had many people who came out to take part in the campaign. We are hoping during our next stop, the people will come again and support the initiative because this can only work if the community takes part in this,” she said.
Residents are encouraged to join the next edition of the Mayoral Clean-up campaign, which will be on Saturday, 24 October 2026, in Katutura Central at the Open Space in Shanghai Street.
“The initiative will go on until the end of November. We are going from one settlement to another. We ask residents to come out in numbers again for the coming weekend,” she said.
