The Association of Retired Principals of Secondary Schools of Nigeria (ARPSSON), Ogun State Chapter, has asked the state Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, to pay consequential pension increases before leaving office.
The association argued that the current pension payments were insufficient to meet retirees’ daily needs in view of the country’s prevailing economic realities.
The President of ARPSSON, Comrade Segun Obadimu, made the appeal during the association’s 2026 Annual State Congress held in Sagamu over the weekend.
Obadimu, while appreciating the government for its support and contributions to the education sector, appealed to the governor to clear the backlog of gratuities for the period between 2020 and 2025.
“Our message to Governor Dapo Abiodun, who has been doing good to pensioners in the state, is for him to actualise the consequential increase in pension for us pensioners.
“The current [pension] being paid cannot take us anywhere. We are also requesting that the backlog of gratuities between 2020 and 2025 be cleared. We believe this is doable before 2027,” he said.
Speaking on the congress theme, “Healthy Life in Retirement”, and the topic, “Ageing Realities with Special Emphasis on Hypertension and Diabetes”, he called for greater attention to the health and well-being of retired educators.
He also stressed the importance of promoting the welfare of retired principals and helping them maintain healthy lives after years of service.
The president said the congress provided an opportunity for retired school principals to discuss the challenges associated with ageing, particularly hypertension and diabetes, and the need for proper health management in retirement.
He, however, urged retired educators to pay attention to their health, undergo regular medical check-ups and follow medical advice to reduce the risks associated with these conditions.
Speaking on the forthcoming general elections, Obadimu said, “We have informed our members to go and cast their votes. Our members should participate actively in the election and stay clear of violence.”
The Public Relations Officer of the association, Dayo Onabowale, urged members to vote for candidates of their choice.
He said, “As we are approaching the election in 2027, I want our members to come out en masse to vote for their candidate, their trusted candidate, so that we can choose the government of our choice.”
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, who was represented by the Zonal Education Officer, Mr Kola Erubami Abolaji, commended the association for organising the congress.
