We really are living in the era of the GameCube and PS2 remaster, and while it's expected that we'll see the likes of the iconic Grand Theft Auto trilogy make their way to modern consoles, or even get to see kaiju clash again in a remaster of Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee in the coming weeks, one of the most exciting remasters of the era has just been announced. You see, remasters are like onions: they have layers, and the deepest cut of all is heading back to consoles. That's right, ahead of Shrek 5's release next year, DreamWorks' hallowed Shrek 2 tie-in game is returning, and there's even a trailer — ready for you to check out below;
Hats off to whoever decided to ride the wave of GTA 6 trailer hype with this announcement, which confirms Shrek 2 Remastered is heading for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on November 10, 2026. The original was one of the standouts in a wave of memorable film-to-game tie-ins of the early noughties, arriving alongside the likes of The Incredibles, Spider-Man 2, and The Warriors to name but a few. It offered a fun co-op platformer retelling of Shrek's journey through Far Far Away, with the chance to play as Fiona, Donkey and more.
Originally developed by Luxoflux and published by Activision, the game is now being brought to modern consoles by Aspyr. According to the game's official storefront description, the remaster will feature “better textures, enhanced UI, [and] 4K resolution”, as well as an all-new Photo Mode and a Cheat Mode that lets you modify the game. It'll support both local and, wait for it… online co-op! A first for the Shrek games.
So there we have it. And honestly, what better excuse could you need to get your old pals together, bust out the munchies and fizzy pop, kick back and take in a nostalgic trip back to one of the PS2's most memorable platformers? Let's just hope that jail escape level isn't as difficult as we remember. *Shudders*
