The history of early blockchain is tied up almost entirely with the creation of cryptocurrency and its use as speculative financial assets. Over time, many businesses and individuals have experimented with this technology, but it has been a long road towards demonstrating clear commercial benefits for many blockchain-based technologies. But there is an increasing number of blockchain-based infrastructures that companies are using for certain kinds of operational tasks.
This has led to a situation where there are multiple paths of interest that people follow in the digital-asset industry. There are plenty of people who are only interested in checking the price of Ethereum to USD on exchanges like Binance and want to invest in crypto. But there is also an increasingly expanding potential for blockchain applications in business, well beyond being used for the buying and selling of speculative financial assets.
Questions about whether a business should move onto the blockchain are being replaced with considerations of which processes could benefit from shared programmable records. The shift in thought is important, from blockchain as a type of experiment to its usefulness as infrastructure for other processes. It could be the key to wider mainstream adoption, more so than any singular cryptocurrency’s success would be.
Why Did Businesses Initially Experiment With Blockchain?
Blockchain attracted the interest of corporate entities originally partly because it provided organisations a way to share records with each other without needing to use any central database structure. In any industry where multiple independent parties need to maintain or coordinate information, this was a particularly attractive quality.
A great example of this can be seen in corporate supply chains. Many of the stakeholders and participants in supply chains, manufacturers, customs authorities, logistics providers and retailers, have historically kept their own separate records about the shipments that pass through their purview. Combining these separate records into a singular shared digital ledger could prove useful in reducing discrepancies and making information easier to trace.
Another way that blockchain is often experimented with is as financial infrastructure. It has been used for payments, recordkeeping and settlement. While experiments of this nature are ongoing, many of them have remained nothing more than isolated experiments, because whatever usefulness the blockchain tech brought, it was still necessary to integrate or use it alongside existing financial infrastructure and processes.
In many of the early experiments with blockchain, there was not enough value demonstrated through the blockchain technology itself to justify a complete overhaul of the existing systems that were in use.
What Has Changed Since Early Blockchain Experiments?
One of the biggest changes is that blockchain infrastructure is much more accessible now than it used to be. There is no longer any need for interested businesses to construct an entire blockchain network from the ground up in order to gain access to blockchain distributed-ledger technology.
Established blockchain networks, specialized infrastructure providers, cloud services and tokenization platforms are all able to offer businesses blockchain components that can often be integrated with existing systems.
This shift has meant that many forms of blockchain technology more closely resemble other types of enterprise software now. Businesses can buy access to a specific sort of application or tool, without needing to completely rearrange their entire technological system.
There have also been developments with tokenized assets and stablecoins that have provided greater use cases for blockchain tech.
Where is Blockchain Becoming Most Useful for Businesses?
One of the biggest areas in blockchain applications that is seeing attention for many businesses is in payments. Payment systems that are built on blockchain networks are able to operate at a continuous rate, which allows for assets to be transferred outside of the normal windows in which financial infrastructure functions.
When a business operates internationally, having faster settlement between counterparties can be a real advantage. The Bank for International Settlements(BIS) estimated that the retail cross-border payment market is more than $800 billion every year in transactions. For this specific application, stablecoins are of particular use because they allow for access to the advantages of digital assets moving on the blockchain, with much less of the volatility that other digital assets experience.
There are benefits for supply-chain and trade processes as well. In this case, it is typically the ability of blockchain systems to provide an immutable record of events that is discussed. Providing more reliable, shared documentation could be very valuable for supply chains.
Is Blockchain Already Moving Beyond the Experimental Stage?
Yes. There are definite signs that some companies are already engaging with blockchain applications, especially in financial infrastructure. The BIS reported that tokenized government bonds had approached an approximate $8 billion in issuance in 2025.
Another example of blockchain moving beyond the experiment stage can be seen in a report from the World Economic Forum, which stated that non-stablecoin real-world-asset tokens had increased to $24 billion in mid 2025, from the $5 billion that existed in 2022.
This is not proof that blockchain will replace the conventional financial infrastructure, but it is proof that blockchain applications are growing in usage rate beyond experiments.
Does Blockchain Replace Existing Business Systems?
Typically, no. In most cases, blockchain systems are being used in concert with existing systems, integrated seamlessly into them, rather than replacing them.
Existing enterprise tools around accounting, banking, customer management and resource planning can easily continue functioning as normal, while blockchain systems are integrated as a layer to handle verification or transactions.
Approaching blockchain technology in this way can make it much simpler to justify. Rather than needing to evaluate the effectiveness of a blockchain system for payments against the entire current system, it only needs to evaluate it against the specific system that it will be replacing.
