Analysis
A live pilot has a registered, tokenized agent completing buyer-approved invoice payments through supplier portals – the mechanism this week's bank lockouts said was missing. Scale, GA timing and liability stay undisclosed.
Between October 13 and October 16, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citi, Schwab, and Wells Fargo locked AI agents out of consumer accounts. The response included four hard blocks and one contract rewrite. Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, characterized the move as a “liability transfer,” citing concerns over unverified agents, the use of shared customer credentials, and unassigned liability. Schwab, for instance, now blocks unauthorized agents like Meta’s Muse at a rate of tens to twenties per week. This defensive posture in consumer banking stands in contrast to a new B2B pilot launched by Visa, BILL, and Billtrust, which seeks to integrate autonomous agents into corporate payment workflows.
Identity Verification and Payment Execution
The pilot, currently live and processing end-to-end transactions, utilizes the Visa Trusted Agent Protocol. This cryptographic standard allows merchants to verify the legitimacy of an agent, replacing the need for CAPTCHA or other bot-blocking mechanisms. By registering the BILL Payment Agent within Visa’s Agentic Directory, the system enables the agent to authenticate itself to the supplier portal without requiring shared credentials or additional logins. The architecture maintains a strict trusted boundary: the agent acts only as an executor for payments already approved by the buyer, using tokenized credentials to adhere to specific payment instructions.
Rationale for B2B Integration
The B2B sector is the primary focus for this model because these payments already operate within established approval hierarchies, internal controls, and the buyer’s specific business rules. Unlike consumer accounts, where access is often opaque, B2B workflows provide a structured environment for agentic commerce. Furthermore, the pilot expands the use of card payments for supplier invoices, offering a new rail for suppliers that have historically relied on ACH or check payments. This shift aims to automate the final manual step of accounts payable-keying payment information into supplier portals-thereby helping suppliers get paid faster, releasing trapped cash, and improving Days Sales Outstanding while retaining necessary reconciliation data.
Industry Perspectives
Mark Nelsen, SVP and Head of Product, Commercial & Money Movement Solutions at Visa, noted the balance required for this transition: “Businesses should not have to choose between automation and control when making payments. This pilot applies agentic commerce to a real B2B-payment problem, by having trusted agents complete payments across platforms. Working with BILL and Billtrust, we are testing how identity, payment controls and transaction visibility can make that model work.”
For BILL, the focus is on removing the manual friction that has long defined accounts payable. Archana Prasad, SVP of Payments and Financial Services at BILL, stated: “Nearly 500,000 businesses trust BILL to move, manage and maximize their money, and that trust depends on removing friction without sacrificing accuracy and security of supplier payments. For too long, supplier portals have been friction points, requiring a person to manually complete what should be an automated step. With Visa and Billtrust, BILL’s AI-powered payments technology is closing that gap: the payment gets done, the supplier gets paid faster, and finance teams get their time back.”
Kunal Patel, SVP of Payments at Billtrust, emphasized the necessity of accountability in these automated workflows: “Agentic commerce will only move forward if businesses can trust agents to operate across systems with the same clarity and accountability they expect from people. By connecting buyer-side invoice approval with supplier-side payment acceptance, this pilot shows how authorized agents can complete business transactions, releasing trapped cash faster while adhering to a complex acceptance policy and preserving visibility and control for both sides.”
Pilot Scope and Limitations
While the pilot is live, its current scope remains limited. The companies have not disclosed the number of participating buyers or suppliers, transaction volumes, the geographic footprint, the pilot end date, or any timeline for general availability. Furthermore, the pilot does not yet establish a formal liability assignment framework. While it demonstrates the mechanics of identity and control, it does not settle the question of who bears the financial responsibility if an approved payment is executed incorrectly. For now, the project serves as a test of whether verified identity and pre-approved instructions can provide the security that consumer-side banking institutions currently find lacking in third-party agent integrations.
