“Who thought this was a good idea?” Scotts Maphuma’s corporate gig divides Mzansi

• Scotts Maphuma performed at what appeared to be a Carling Black Label corporate event, and the footage quickly made its way online
• The clip showed the artist performing before a seated, low-energy audience, prompting strong reactions from fans online
• Netizens questioned the decision to book Maphuma for the event, with some saying real artists deserved the opportunity instead

A video of Scotts Maphuma performing at what appears to be a branded corporate event has set social media alight, with fans questioning who exactly thought the booking was a good idea. The clip, which circulated on X, showed the artist performing inside a venue decked out in Carling Black Label signage beneath a "Champion Coach Experience" backdrop, with a host working a microphone before a seated, relatively subdued crowd in red-lit surroundings.

What happened at the corporate gig?

The footage captured Maphuma on stage in an atmosphere that felt far removed from the charged energy of a typical concert crowd. The audience sat rather than stood, and the celebratory vibe of the event did not quite translate into the kind of response fans expect when they see their favourite artists perform live. The contrast between Maphuma's performance style and the corporate setting was enough to get people talking.

The debate around whether artists are well-matched to their bookings is not new in Mzansi, but this particular clip clearly struck a nerve, drawing a sharp divide between those who found the performance cringe-worthy and those willing to give Maphuma the benefit of the doubt.

Fans react to the booking

The clip ignited a heated conversation among fans online.

@motionsznn kicked things off with a pointed observation, writing,

"Never seen such an awkward performance, but I know the bag was heavy. Whoever's idea it was to book Scott Maphuma to a corporate event needs to catch hands because what were they thinking."

@Leboo_Cooks offered a different take, suggesting that a quieter, more controlled crowd might actually suit the artist:

"Based on how I've seen him react when fans get excited to see him, this is probably the kind of audience he prefers. He might actually be happy with it, and we wouldn't even know.”

@OtherKwenze used the moment to raise a broader point about opportunity, writing:

"Mind you, we have real artists and vocalists who deserve these opportunities.”

@Mydali_Lebeko kept it short and sharp with:

"Abamazi no mazi."
