Analysis
Apple's $299 hub has no App Store. Third-party apps arrive through CarPlay — the same framework built for the car dashboard. Buyers expecting an iOS-level app ecosystem get a media player instead.
The $299 Apple HomeView launched this week with a beautiful 7-inch Liquid Retina display, an A18 chip, and Siri AI. What it did not launch with: an App Store.
The Dashboard Constraint
Instead, the only pathway for third-party apps on HomeView runs through CarPlay — the same framework Apple built for the car dashboard. Apple’s own developer page confirms it: “CarPlay audio and video apps also work on Apple HomeView without requiring you to make any modifications to your app.” That sounds convenient until you realize what it actually means: the apps that show up on your kitchen counter hub are the same ones designed for a 6-inch screen mounted on your dashboard while you drive.
What You Actually Get
HomeView ships with 15 built-in Apple apps: Alarms, Calendar, FaceTime, Find My, Home, Intercom, Messages, Music, Podcasts, Reminders, Safari, Settings, Timers, Weather, and World Clock. For third-party content, you get whatever CarPlay-compatible audio and video apps happen to be installed on your paired iPhone — Spotify, Apple Music Classical, Apple News, Apple TV, Audiobooks, and according to MacRumors, video apps like YouTube, Netflix, and Disney+ if they hold CarPlay video entitlements, which were only introduced in iOS 27 last month.
The CarPlay framework was designed for constrained interfaces in driving contexts. It supports audio, video, messaging via SiriKit, and navigation. It does not support the kind of rich, interactive app experiences you get on an iPhone or iPad. Apple’s message to developers is essentially: your CarPlay app already works on HomeView, no changes needed. That is a clean integration story, but it also tells you what HomeView is — a media terminal, not a general-purpose computing platform.
The Pattern We Saw Coming
This finding extends the hardware-first, software-later thesis we set out in our pre-event analysis. We argued Apple was selling a high-end display for a brain that was still on vacation. The claims ledger we published after the event documented what shipped, what was promised, and what was missing — but the App Store absence was not isolated as its own finding then because the launches were simultaneous. Now that the device is in hand, the constraint is the story.
The Competitor Gap
Contrast this with Meta’s Muse, which launched on September 8. Muse is already handling actual tasks — email, travel planning, health tracking, shopping. It is an agent that does things. HomeView, by comparison, is an agent that plays things. The $299 hub runs car-dashboard constraints instead of the app experience buyers expect.
The thing to watch is whether Apple evolves the CarPlay framework to support more complex, non-media interactions — or whether the hardware-first, software-later thesis remains the operating reality for HomeView’s first year. For now, if you are buying this expecting an iOS-level app experience, you are getting a car dashboard for your kitchen. And for $299, that is a question worth asking before you preorder.
