Cam Skattebo’s blunder may have cost the New York Giants a win, but the fans are behind their running back regardless.
The New York Giants played out an overtime tie with division rivals, the Washington Commanders on Sunday. Despite trailing through the game, New York managed to force overtime, and they had a chance to win the game, too.
Cam Skattebo has become a fan favourite for the Giants since his arrival to the franchise in 2025. His ‘no holds barred’ style of play has endeared him to fans, but it can also prove to be costly at times. That’s exactly what happened in the 27-27 tie.
Giants fans think this was a rare mistake from Cam Skattebo, defend him on social media
With the Giants in field-goal range in overtime, Skattebo lost the ball on a run from the Commanders’ 24-yard line with 1:55 remaining by Shy Tuttle. He addressed the situation after the game, accepting that it hurts.
“It sucks. There’s 11 guys on the other team just screaming at you, telling you you messed up, it’s your fault, you sold the game, everything,” Skattebo said. “You get that in the huddle. You get that lying on the floor after you do it. It sucks.”
Normally, a player would be crucified for a mistake like this, but fans online were surprisingly supportive.
“Let’s calm tf down with the criticism: this dude is the heart and soul of this team and especially this offense,” one fan said. “If he doesn’t fumble we are talking about how Skatt had 33 yards rushing on 3 attempts to get us in FG range,” a second fan pointed out.
“Well, he has a winning attitude. It’s how you react that separates the men from the boys,” a third fan wrote. “Admitting your mistakes goes farther in people respecting you. He’s a respectful kid,” claimed a fourth fan. “I love this kid anyway! S*** happens in football,” a fifth fan commented.
Neither team is too likely to be happy with the result, but it is ultimately not a loss. As far as Skattebo is concerned, his attitude and exuberance are what make him great. It would be a shame if he let one mistake affect that aspect of his game. Doesn’t look like the fans want him to change, either.
