South Africa’s Valterra Platinum mined 6% less metal in the third quarter after safety stoppages. It kept its full-year target, and its prices rose.
Valterra Platinum, listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), said on Friday, 23 October 2026, that output fell 6% in the quarter. Production reached 804,300 ounces in the three months to 30 September, and Business Day puts the year-earlier figure at 855,100 ounces.
Platinum group metals, or PGMs, are rare metals used in car exhaust systems, hydrogen equipment and electronics. The company kept its 2026 target of 3.0 to 3.4 million ounces, so Friday’s report leaves its yearly outlook unchanged.
What Valterra Platinum Reported on Friday
The company published its production report for the quarter ending 30 September 2026 at 08:10 South African time on Friday. The figures cover its own mines and the ore concentrate it buys from other miners.
Own-mined output was 511,900 ounces, down 5%, mainly because of safety stoppages at the Amandelbult mine. Purchases of concentrate from other producers fell 7% to 292,400 ounces.
Business Day carried the same totals on Friday. Mining Weekly added that iridium and ruthenium, two smaller PGMs, kept outperforming the main metals.
Why Refined Output Fell 41%
Refined output, which excludes metal processed for others under tolling contracts, fell 41% to 576,900 ounces. The company says planned processing maintenance and annual stock counts moved from the first quarter into the third.
Nine-month refined output was broadly in line with last year, which supports that timing explanation. Sales volumes fell 27% to 683,300 ounces, and Business Day says they were partly supported by drawing down refined stock.
Nine-month sales matched the same period of 2025. Nickel output fell 39% to 3,825 tonnes and copper fell 22% to 3,294 tonnes, while chrome concentrate rose 7% to 277,000 tonnes.
In Plain English
PGMs are six rare metals led by platinum and palladium, and this report’s total adds gold to five of them. The basket price is the average price Valterra received per ounce across all the metals it sold.
Mine by Mine, Safety Stoppages Weigh Most
Amandelbult produced 137,900 ounces, down 10%, after Section 54 regulatory safety stoppages and the company’s own stoppages across the mine. One worker died in a fall-of-ground incident at Tumela, part of Amandelbult, in July.
Output returned to steady state by quarter end, and the company expects a step-up in the fourth quarter. Mogalakwena, in Limpopo province, made 217,600 ounces, down 4%, after a lease on its Baobab concentrator expired.
Mototolo rose 7% to 70,800 ounces, while Unki in Zimbabwe fell 12% to 50,600 ounces on lower ore grades. Modikwa, where Valterra counts a 50% share, fell 5% to 35,000 ounces.
Prices, Costs and the Tharisa Deal
The average realised price was R38,815 per ounce (US$2,383), up 15% in rand and 24% in dollars from a year earlier. Mining Weekly says prices of the main metals eased from the second quarter amid weaker car sales and economic worries.
Mining Weekly gives Valterra’s realised iridium price at US$7,720 an ounce, against US$4,287 a year earlier, and ruthenium at US$1,583, against US$799. It links the rise to tight iridium supply and demand from green hydrogen, electronics and data centres.
Cash costs are expected near the top of R19,000 to R20,000 per ounce (about US$1,146 to US$1,206). The company blames fuel, chemical and blasting inflation linked to the Middle East conflict, plus the stoppages.
Valterra signed two new concentrate purchase agreements with Tharisa plc, which it says improve margins on third-party processing. Business Day says the binding multiyear deal starts on 1 January 2027, covers half of Tharisa Mine’s PGM concentrate and replaces Sibanye-Stillwater.
What It Means for US Readers
Platinum, palladium and rhodium clean vehicle exhaust, and iridium goes into hydrogen electrolysers that US developers buy. No source says Valterra’s quarter changes prices or supply in the United States.
For US investors, this is an operating update, not a profit result, and guidance was held. Sibanye-Stillwater, which trades in New York and mines in Montana, is the buyer Business Day says Valterra replaces at Tharisa.
Multiplying 683,300 ounces by the US$2,383 basket price gives roughly US$1.6 billion, simple arithmetic and not a company figure. Visitors and residents face no direct effect, since the report concerns mine output and company costs.
What Is Not Known
The production report as read gives no quarterly revenue, profit or dividend figure. It also gives its safety injury rate twice with different values, 1.45 and 1.41 per million hours, so this article uses neither.
The size of the fourth-quarter step-up at Amandelbult is not stated. The start date and share of the Tharisa agreement come from Business Day, not from the company’s report.
Neither the company nor the outlets say what the Tharisa change means for Sibanye-Stillwater’s earnings. No source gives Valterra’s sales to US customers or its exposure to US tariffs.
What Comes Next
Valterra says production remains on track for its 2026 range, and its fourth-quarter report will show whether Amandelbult recovers as promised. No release date for that report appears in the sources read.
The Tharisa agreement is due to start on 1 January 2027, Business Day says. The company says outside safety specialists are reviewing its practices, and Mining Weekly quotes Miller saying recommendations are being implemented.
