Capcom released the highly successful Resident Evil 2 Remake in 2019. Originally, the developers designed the campaigns for Leon and Claire as strictly single-player adventures. These solo missions deliberately made players feel isolated and vulnerable. However, a brand-new PC mod changes everything by allowing players to explore Raccoon City together using local co-op in Resident Evil 2 Remake.
How the Local Couch Co-Op Mod Works in Resident Evil 2 Remake
A Nexus Mods creator named Shopcreeper01 developed this exciting addition. The creator originally started the project so his wife could get help playing scary games. Previously known as “HUNK’y Friend”, the Local Couch Co-op mod turns the survival horror game into a proper two-player experience.

Player 2 does not just act as a simple follower. Instead, they can fully control HUNK or several other characters. Furthermore, each player gets separate aiming, weapons, inventory, pickups, a flashlight, and HUD elements. Both characters can trade supplies and take damage. You can even revive your partner after they go down. However, if both characters die, the run ends entirely.
Currently, the mod supports shared-screen and split-screen play. Solo players can also use an AI-controlled companion mode. Additionally, the mod includes a unique experimental mode inspired by the game Pragmata. In this mode, one player controls the movement while the other handles all the aiming and shooting. To run this package smoothly, players must use the Steam PC version of the game and install REFramework.
Changing the Survival Horror Experience
Adding a second player heavily alters the game’s atmosphere. The 2019 remake built its tension by forcing players to make tough choices alone. Players had to conserve ammunition, squeeze past zombies, and listen for Mr. X’s footsteps while low on health.
Having a second gun definitely makes some enemy encounters much easier. Still, a partner brings new risks. Another player can get grabbed by zombies, waste valuable supplies, or die at the worst possible moment.
Cooperative gameplay has a long history in the Resident Evil franchise. For example, the cult-classic Outbreak series let up to four players escape Raccoon City together. Later, Resident Evil 5 built its entire campaign around Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar working as a team. Resident Evil 6 pushed even further into co-op action. Eventually, Revelations 2 paired characters with complementary abilities.
Applying this cooperative formula to a deliberately claustrophobic modern remake makes this new mod very special. Meanwhile, fans continue to wonder if Capcom will officially remake Resident Evil 5. A partner is completely baked into that game’s campaign. Until Capcom officially announces its next cooperative project, PC players can finally see how a modern Resident Evil remake feels with a friend.
