He’s one of Yorkshire’s greatest ever sportsmen who was well-known for never mincing his words.
And as Sir Geoffrey Boycott turns 86, here’s a reminder of some of his best, most outspoken moments.
Never short of a punchy verdict in the commentary box, Boycott has provided some memorable one-liners over the years.
“I always loved the Yorkshire members and was passionate about playing for the county, but the people who were running the club made it at times unbearable for me. The rulers had a history of doing what they wanted and sacking players seemingly on a whim.”
“I agree that my single-minded approach was a failing in life, but if I upset people, it was never intentional - it was just the unfortunate result of a burning desire to get the best out of myself and achieve as much as possible.”
On Australian captain Ricky Ponting’s decision to bowl at the vital Edgbaston Ashes test in 2005. “He likes the English so much he changed the series for them with the most stupid decision he’ll ever make in his life.”
“If (Marcus) Trescothick had tried to get me off the field when batting well, I’d have hit him with my bat.”
“I reckon my mum could have caught that in her pinny!”On a dropped catch by Australian Shane Watson in 2014
“Paul Harris is a buffet bowler – you just help yourself.”
On facing fast bowlers as a batsman: “To have some idea what it’s like, stand in the outside lane of a motorway, get your mate to drive his car at you at 95 mph and wait until he’s 12 yards away, before you decide which way to jump.”
“Until you've had depression I don't think you're qualified to talk about it.”
“I don't think anybody can totally change what they are. I'd always been a strident individual, but cancer does smooth off a lot of the edges. I have been lucky to have survived an extra 12 years of my life with my wife and daughter.”
