Canada is mourning a terrible tragedy at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, in Alberta, where a devastating fire that broke out during training exercises claimed the lives of four Canadian military personnel and left others seriously injured. Behind these heartbreaking losses are sons and daughters, husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, whose lives and families have been forever changed. It is a painful reminder that military service carries risks, even when Canada is at peace.
Some MPs cried. Others prayed or reflected quietly. And all listened solemnly as party leaders delivered heartfelt homages in the House of Commons to the military members killed or injured by the devastating fire at CFB Wainwright this weekend. What was meant to be a Monday of typical fierce and raucous debate instead began with a moment of silence during a day of recollection and well wishes by leaders of all federal parties. All opposition leaders promised that the “time for answers” from the government would come as everyone focused their speeches Monday on remembering the dead, supporting the injured and thanking first responders.
Report traces alleged Muslim Brotherhood influence in Canada
A new report alleges that the Muslim Brotherhood is infiltrating Canadian institutions through various non-profit organizations and universities, a trend that it frames as part of a broader transnational ideological strategy. In a sprawling 200-page study, the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy (ISGAP) argues that, through an organized campaign of pro-Palestinian activism and anti-Islamophobia rhetoric, the Brotherhood and other groups are helping to foment antisemitism in Canada. The organizations, the report alleges, are often funded through highly sophisticated financial channels that run through Qatar, and have embedded themselves in some of Canada’s biggest universities. “Under the radar, Canada is being infiltrated,” said Charles Small, founder and director of ISGAP.
John Ivison: Disturbing new details about why TMU redacted the report into its institutional campus antisemitism
Writes Ivison: “Earlier this month, I wrote that universities across the country are finally getting together to address the epidemic of antisemitism that has broken out on campuses across the country. I referred to a review of antisemitic incidents at Toronto Metropolitan University undertaken by retired justice Mary Lou Benotto and delivered to TMU last August. At the time, I said pages from the report were redacted on privacy grounds (several students were charged after the protests under review). But I was wrong. The pages that were redacted were taken out to remove Benotto’s conclusion, stated clearly, that the university’s own codes of conduct were breached — a finding that would have forced TMU to take action that it apparently did not want to take.”
Air Canada to charge $30 if you call them to book your flight
Air Canada has just added a new fee, this one to tickets booked through the airline’s telephone call centre. Beginning Oct. 15, all new bookings made by calling the airline carry a $30 non-refundable fee. The charge is per passenger, so booking flights for a family of four would cost $120. The fee does not apply if the booking is made through another method. “Air Canada’s website and mobile app make it easy to book and manage your travel,” the airline said in announcing the change. “Using these digital tools for everyday travel needs helps reduce wait times and allows our Contact Centre agents to focus their expertise on situations that require personalized support.”
