PERLIS Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah has been suspended from Bersatu for two party election terms, effective Oct 13.
Bersatu Perlis chairman Izizam Ibrahim confirmed the suspension, saying the letter informing Abu Bakar of the decision was issued last week.
However, Izizam denied circulating the letter, which began making the rounds on social media earlier this week.
“The letter was issued last week, but I was not the one who circulated it. The Menteri Besar is also aware of the suspension,” he was reported saying.
He said the party was now waiting for an official decision from Bersatu’s central leadership and the PAS assemblymen.
The letter, dated Oct 14, was signed by Bersatu Disciplinary Board chairman Datuk Mohd Radzi Manan and informed Abu Bakar, who is also the party’s Kangar division chief, of the decision.
According to the letter, the disciplinary board decided at a meeting on Oct 13 to suspend Abu Bakar’s membership rights for two party election terms under Clause 22.5 of the Bersatu constitution.
The suspension followed alleged breaches of Clause 9.1.4 of the party constitution and its Code of Ethics and Conduct.
Abu Bakar has also been removed from all party positions and barred from issuing statements on behalf of Bersatu during the suspension.
He may appeal to the party’s Appeals Board within 14 days of the notice being issued, the letter stated. – October 21, 2026
