Two men have died after a heavily loaded tipper truck suspected to have suffered brake failure crashed into a Mercedes-Benz car at Dangi Underpass along the Kano-Zaria Road in Kano State.
The accident occurred at about 5:50pm on Tuesday and involved a Howo tipper truck carrying bitumen and a Mercedes-Benz C180, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano Sector Command.
Abdullahi Labaran, the command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the fatalities in a statement issued on Tuesday night, saying four adult males were involved in the crash, with two confirmed dead.
The FRSC said preliminary investigations indicated that the truck, with registration number RMG 332 XA, allegedly developed brake problems, causing the driver to lose control before it slid backwards and struck the Mercedes-Benz, with registration number ABJ 783 GB, behind it.
The corps said rescue personnel and other emergency responders conveyed the victims to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for medical attention.
However, the statement did not disclose the identities of the deceased or provide further details about the conditions of the survivors.
Reacting to the incident, Idris Lawal, the Kano Sector Commander of the FRSC, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the repose of their souls.
Lawal urged commercial vehicle operators, transport unions and construction companies to prioritise routine vehicle maintenance, particularly inspections of braking systems and tyres, to prevent avoidable road crashes.
He warned that mechanical defects in heavy-duty vehicles carrying substantial loads could endanger both occupants and other road users, especially on busy highways.
The sector commander also advised motorists to practise defensive driving, maintain safe distances from vehicles ahead and remain alert to changing road conditions.
He stressed that drivers must ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on journeys, noting that regular servicing and responsible driving were essential to reducing road accidents.
The FRSC further urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and adopt safe driving practices to protect themselves and other road users.
The incident highlights the potential dangers of mechanical failure involving heavily loaded commercial trucks and the need for effective vehicle inspections to improve road safety across Kano State.
