Vosloo plays Sir Theodore Hector, a British colonial-era antagonist in the film directed by Rahul Sankrityan. His casting brings a familiar Hollywood face into a Telugu film built around resistance, famine and the consequences of British colonial rule.
Who is Arnold Vosloo?
Arnold Vosloo is a South African actor who built his career across films, television and theatre before becoming widely known in Hollywood. Born on June 16, 1962, in Pretoria, South Africa, he grew up in a family with a background in acting. His parents were theatre performers, which gave him an early exposure to the stage.
Vosloo began his career in South African productions before moving into American films. He gradually established himself in action movies and thrillers, often playing characters who posed a serious challenge to the protagonists. His breakthrough with international audiences came in 1999, when he played Imhotep in The Mummy, directed by Stephen Sommers. The film starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz and combined adventure, horror and comedy. Vosloo's portrayal of the resurrected Egyptian priest became one of its most memorable elements. He returned as Imhotep in the 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns. The two films helped cement his reputation as an actor who could make a villain both intimidating and memorable.
Arnold Vosloo as Imhotep in The Mummy
In The Mummy, Vosloo played Imhotep, an ancient Egyptian high priest who is brought back to life after a group of adventurers disturbs his resting place. The character seeks to reunite with his lost love while unleashing a series of supernatural threats. The role required more than a conventional antagonist. Imhotep could be menacing, relentless and emotionally driven by his past. Vosloo's performance helped give the character a distinctive presence alongside Fraser's adventurous hero.

Arnold Vosloo Movies: From G.I. Joe to 24: Other films and shows featuring Arnold Vosloo
Although The Mummy remains his best-known work, Vosloo has appeared in several other prominent Hollywood productions.
He featured in John Woo's action thriller Hard Target (1993), starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. The film gave him an early opportunity to work in a major American action production.
Vosloo later played Zartan in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009), based on the popular action figure franchise. He returned to the role in its 2013 sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
His television credits include the action series 24, in which he played Habib Marwan during its fourth season. The role placed him in another high-stakes story involving political violence and national security.
Vosloo also appeared in Blood Diamond (2006), the film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou, and took on roles in television projects including NCIS and Bosch.

What is Arnold Vosloo's role in Ranabaali?
In Ranabaali, Vosloo plays Sir Theodore Hector, the antagonist facing Vijay Deverakonda's titular character. Rashmika Mandanna plays Jayamma, Ranabaali's wife and an important figure in the story. The film is set against the backdrop of British colonial rule and the devastating Madras Famine of 1876–78. It combines historical references with action, folklore and fictionalised events.
Director Rahul Sankrityan has described Ranabaali as an alternate-history narrative rather than a straightforward reconstruction of the past. The film takes creative liberties with historical events to build its story of resistance. Hector's character has been linked to Sir Richard Temple, the British administrator associated with famine policy during the period. However, the character in the film is fictionalised, and the story should not be treated as a documentary account of the historical figure.
Vosloo's casting adds an international dimension to the project. His experience playing antagonists in Hollywood productions makes him a recognisable presence in a story that places its central conflict in colonial-era India.
Ranabaali reunites Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna
The film also brings Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna together again after their earlier collaborations in Geetha Govindam (2018) and Dear Comrade (2019). Deverakonda plays Ranabaali, a character who rises against colonial oppression, while Mandanna portrays Jayamma. Their roles sit at the centre of the film's story, with Vosloo's Hector serving as a key opposing force.
Directed by Rahul Sankrityan and produced by Mythri Movie Makers, Ranabaali blends period drama with large-scale action. Its setting during a devastating famine gives the story a historical backdrop, while its alternate-history approach allows the filmmakers to create a fictional narrative around that period.
