Thank you, Premier Smith, for real representative governance. From shutting down ridiculous infill policies in Edmonton to asking everyone their opinion on separation (which hopefully is buried because of you) and a majority in favour of limiting immigration and paying for them, you are the best leader in Canada. Honest and true to your word.

Many will argue what the results of the referendum mean. I have two conclusions. The first is that the people of Alberta should never let the government reduce such complex issues as separation, division of powers and how we treat each other to a referendum. We have a representative democracy — the people we elect have the duty (and time and resources) to do so on our behalf. Thomas Lukaszuk tried his best to have the legislature do exactly that, only to be thwarted by Premier Smith.
The second is that Ms. Smith should interpret the results of the vote on the “other nine” with great caution. Imagine what the result might have been had she not harnessed the resources of the government to try to convince voters of her position. She does not have a strong mandate, if any at all.
Trevor Theman, Edmonton
I hope people realize that the 25 per cent that voted for a second referendum were only voting to hold a second referendum on separatism and not necessarily for separation itself. I heard many people talk of just “sending Ottawa a message” and that they weren’t actually wanting to leave Canada.
That means that the percentage of people who want to leave Canada is actually smaller than that 25 per cent. In fact, quite a minority. Time for democracy to start working and for Albertans to move along from this posturing and bowing to a tiny fraction of Albertans. And wasting our money.
