The fifth season of True Detective has cast its leads.
Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will star in the HBO anthology’s next season, which is set to begin filming in 2027. Both stars have been rumored to be attached to the show for some time: Cage was first reported to be in talks for a lead role in the summer of 2025, and speculation about Banderas joining True Detective first surfaced late last year.
Cage all but confirmed the role during an appearance at New York Comic Con last week: “Because you can only do so many movies back to back to act, and necessity is the mother of invention, you can connect those dots too,” he said. “What do I mean by necessity? Feed the family, and don’t do too many movies back to back to back. So I think I’m probably going to do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective. That’s OK that I’m the first to announce that, right?”
HBO (newly under the Skydance umbrella following the close of the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger) is keeping story details locked away for now, but it did offer up character names for the two stars: Cage will play Henry Logan, and Banderas will play Rai Garcia.
HBO picked up a fifth season of True Detective in February 2024, shortly after the show’s fourth season — subtitled Night Country — concluded with strong ratings and more critical praise than the anthology’s previous two seasons. Night Country showrunner Issa López will serve in the same capacity in season five (in addition to writing and directing). López executive produces with Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Cage, Banderas, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, series creator Nic Pizzolatto, season one director Cary Joji Fukunaga and season one stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.
Cage is coming off of Spider-Noir at Prime Video and will next be seen in Madden (also on Prime), playing NFL coach, commentator and video game innovator John Madden. He is repped by WME, Stride Management and attorney Patrick Knapp.
Banderas’ recent credits include the Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony, Babygirl and Up Against It, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. He is repped by NuCo Media Group and Greenberg Glusker.
