MONROVIA, October 20, 2026 – Saar Insurance Company has rejected calls by aggrieved members of the National Teachers Association of Liberia (NTAL) to terminate its health insurance contract with the association, insisting that no sufficient grounds have been presented to justify the demand.
The company’s response follows a peaceful protest at NTAL headquarters, where dissatisfied teachers submitted a 17-count petition demanding an audit of the association’s finances, the reinstatement of National Secretary General Samuel Johnson in accordance with a Labour Court ruling, and the cancellation of the insurance agreement.
Addressing a news conference in Monrovia on Monday, October 19, Saar Insurance Deputy Managing Director Philip Tamba Cooper defended the company’s performance, maintaining that it continues to fulfill its contractual obligations to NTAL and other clients.
Cooper disclosed that Saar pays between US$400,000 and US$500,000 monthly in medical claims to hospitals, clinics and other healthcare providers serving its insured clients.
He challenged the protesting teachers to provide specific evidence of contractual violations or inadequate services to substantiate their demand for cancellation.
According to Cooper, Saar maintains partnerships with healthcare facilities in nearly all 15 counties, ensuring access to medical services for insured members.
He said the company has also simplified its procedures, allowing principal policyholders to obtain medical treatment by presenting their insurance identification cards.
Meanwhile, Cooper raised concerns about alleged insurance fraud, claiming that some individuals have attempted to access medical services using identification cards belonging to other policyholders.
He disclosed that the company has confiscated numerous cards suspected of being used fraudulently.
The insurance dispute comes amid growing disagreements within NTAL over financial accountability, leadership and the management of the association.
However, the protesting teachers’ specific complaints about the insurance agreement remain unclear, while NTAL leadership has yet to respond to the latest controversy.
