Cuban Woman Faces Discrimination in Quintana Roo's Foreign Affairs Office: "They Targeted Me for Being Cuban"

Elizabeth Ponte Zaldívar, a Cuban national, has come forward with allegations of xenophobia and discrimination at a Foreign Affairs office in Cancún, Quintana Roo. She was there to apply for her Mexican passport after gaining citizenship through naturalization.

In a video shared on Instagram, Ponte Zaldívar detailed how an employee's demeanor shifted once she learned of her Cuban origins. According to her, the staff member made derogatory remarks about Cubans and the perceived ease of obtaining Mexican citizenship.

"I just experienced xenophobia and discrimination at the Foreign Affairs office in Cancún," Ponte Zaldívar stated at the start of her account.

She explained that she had recently become a naturalized Mexican citizen, and her visit was to procure her first Mexican passport.

"I've been living here for over three years and have never been mistreated or discriminated against anywhere," she asserted, praising her prior positive interactions with public services in Mexico.

Unexpected Encounter with Prejudice

However, things took a turn when the employee reviewed her documents and realized she was Cuban.

"The woman was perfectly polite until she asked about my origin and saw my papers. Once she knew I was Cuban, her expression turned disdainful, and she commented that I was just another Cuban invading this country," she recounted.

Her immediate reaction was one of disbelief: "I don't think so," she replied. Yet, the derogatory comments did not cease.

"As she continued her work, she remarked that it used to be much harder to obtain Mexican nationality, insinuating that it’s now being handed out," she added.

Defending Her Rightful Status

Ponte Zaldívar strongly refuted any insinuation that her citizenship was unearned, emphasizing the legal process involved.

"Naturalization isn't a gift; it's a legal procedure recognized by Mexican law, with specific requirements," she stated, highlighting that the Mexican Constitution prohibits discrimination based on national origin.

She expressed her dismay that a public servant would make such disparaging comments about her nationality.

"It's unacceptable for someone in a public institution to undermine my nationality and make me feel less because of where I come from," she declared.

Ponte Zaldívar reiterated that her residency and citizenship were obtained through legal means.

"I came here legally, and I'm a Mexican citizen because I met the requirements and worked hard for it. So no, nobody gave me anything," she emphasized.

In her Instagram post, she described the incident as particularly painful.

"It was a horrible experience. It feels awful to be treated differently and made to feel inferior simply because of your country of origin," she wrote.

She argued against any form of discrimination based on nationality, urging for awareness of such issues in society.

"No one deserves unequal treatment because of their roots," she insisted.

Despite the incident, she maintained her affection for Mexico and her pride in her dual nationality.

"I love this country, and this negative experience won't change my opinion of it," she affirmed, concluding with a statement of pride in her identity: "I am proud to be Cuban and now proud to be Cuban Mexican."

Community Reactions and Calls for Action

The post garnered numerous responses, with users offering support, questioning the employee's behavior, and sharing their own migrant experiences in Mexico.

"She shouldn't be working there if she holds such views," one commenter stated, while another found it particularly troubling that such sentiments came from a public service worker.

One Cuban user noted the time, money, and effort required for naturalization, rejecting the notion of it being an unearned benefit.

"It's curious to say it's given away when it involves costs and meeting requirements," they remarked.

Another participant, identifying as Mexican, emphasized the importance of avoiding stereotypes about foreigners.

"Just like there are good and bad Cubans, the same goes for Mexicans. We're all humans seeking better lives, regardless of nationality," they expressed.

Several comments recounted similar experiences at workplaces and institutions in Cancún, including difficulties in employment and housing due to Cuban origins.

Many urged Ponte to file a formal complaint with the Foreign Affairs department to ensure the incident is investigated.

Not everyone agreed on the interpretation of the issue; some argued against generalizing the problem to Mexican society, while others debated the tensions and prejudices faced by various nationalities.

Ponte Zaldívar herself had asked viewers to avoid such generalizations at the end of her video.

"Let's stop generalizing; there are all kinds of people in every country," she summarized, adding, "Respect knows no nationality."

Background of Discrimination Against Cubans in Mexico

Ponte Zaldívar's complaint comes months after Cuban community members in Cancún reported an increasingly hostile environment affecting their daily lives.

In May, Cubans living in Mexico opposed broad generalizations about their community following a violent incident involving a Cuban and a Mexican in Cancún, which led to protests and property damage.

Marylín Torres Leal, head of the migrant support group CISVAC, highlighted reports of employment discrimination, rental challenges, and verbal abuse against Cubans in the city.

The situation prompted some Cubans to seek a formal response from Cuban diplomatic authorities regarding discrimination in Quintana Roo.

In June, the Quintana Roo government urged against retaliatory actions and stigmatization of Cuban citizens following incidents in Cancún and Puerto Morelos.

State Secretary María Cristina Torres Gómez rejected blaming an entire nationality for individual actions.

In May, another young Cuban shared her experience of humiliation while job hunting in Mexico, attributing the mistreatment to her Cuban nationality.

For many Cuban emigrants, Mexican citizenship offers stability and new rights. Recently, a Cuban resident in Cancún proudly displayed her Mexican passport, explaining how it expanded her travel opportunities.
