The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has warned that poor waste management in densely populated informal settlements puts residents’ health and well-being at risk.
The agency said on Thursday, October 22, in a post on X that waste management is not merely an environmental sanitation issue but also a public health priority.
UN-Habitat added that improving waste management and giving it greater attention are essential to creating healthy cities.
Rapid urbanization and the expansion of informal settlements are increasing demand for urban services, including waste collection and disposal.
Accumulated waste and the lack of proper collection and disposal systems can contribute to disease and environmental pollution.
