The husband complied, hoping that his wife would recover safely from the procedure.
However, when he returned to the hospital the following morning, he reportedly discovered that his wife had died while their newborn had been taken to an incubator.
Ogutu questioned how a woman could go to hospital to give birth and lose her life without her family being informed of her condition.
“How can a mother go to bring life and lose hers, and the family is not even informed?” he posed.
He called on Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital management to take responsibility, provide the bereaved family with a clear explanation of what happened, and take steps to prevent similar tragedies.
Mama Lucy Hospital Responds
In a statement dated Sunday, October 18, 2026, Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital confirmed the death of a patient who had been receiving maternal healthcare services at the facility.
The hospital expressed condolences to the bereaved family, acknowledging the profound loss associated with the death of a mother.
“Every maternal death is a matter of grave concern to the hospital,” the management stated, reaffirming its commitment to providing safe, timely, respectful and quality healthcare.
The facility further disclosed that it had undertaken an internal multidisciplinary clinical review of the circumstances surrounding the incident, in line with established maternal healthcare quality assurance procedures.
It said any appropriate follow-up would be guided by the findings of the clinical review, adding that it remained committed to patient safety, professional standards and continuous improvement in service delivery.
The hospital also appealed for the bereaved family's privacy and dignity to be respected as they mourn their loved one.
However, the statement did not publicly detail the medical circumstances surrounding Mary-Anne's death or address the family's reported concerns about communication with her husband.
The findings of the clinical review and any further explanation from the hospital could help clarify the circumstances surrounding the mother's death.
For the family, the loss leaves them grieving a mother while caring for a newborn, with questions about what happened during the hospital stay still awaiting clear answers.
